Day 60: Courtyard (Third Shift)

Dec 09, 2011 15:04

Free range shift, huh? Landel really was the opposite of Aguilar...if 'free range' were true, that is. As it was, 'free range' was merely an illusion of choice in Zero's eyes. Making the prisoners think they had more leniency granted to them than they really did. What did a 'free range shift' do for them? They still couldn't leave, and the only ( Read more... )

Free range didn't exactly sound that much better than how it seemed like things were usually done in this place. It wasn't like it meant any of them could just get up and leave. As it was, all it meant was that they had a little more freedom inside their prison.

At the very least, however, it was a break from the usual routine. Even if it had only been less than three days, it all grated horribly on Leanne, how structured their days were in this place. Any chance to take a break from it was a relief, as far as she was concerned.

So why not take it a step further, and take her lunch outside with her? Even if she couldn't actually leave the place, at least she wouldn't still be staring at the same dreary walls.

Once she stepped out on the courtyard, hoping to get some fresh air, Leanne's eye was soon caught by a familiar head of long hair. "Zero?" she called out, a smile coming to her face even as she knew he probably wouldn't appreciate the way she called out to him. "Hey, Zero!"

Just like last shift, someone was going to interrupt his thoughts for a little out-of-the-blue social contact. At least this time Zero was able to prevent repeating what happened last shift by instantly noticing the fact that someone was calling his name. Thankfully ( ... )

She couldn't say she was surprised by the reaction she got, almost expected it after how he'd acted during the previous night, but Leanne couldn't deny she would have preferred a somewhat more enthusiastic response. Heck, even a twitch might have been better than that face. Nevertheless, she kept the smile on her face, quickly moving forward.

"That's right!" She nodded, stopping a few feet away from him. "You're okay! I thought you'd be, but after I woke up this morning, I was wondering... Especially with..." Her smile slipped some as she shot a glance over her shoulder, in the direction of the building behind her. "With how everything's so different here now."

Shaking her head slightly, Leanne let her smile widen into a grin, putting all thoughts of just what was going on out of her mind for the moment. "But I didn't expect to see you here!"

"...Mn." That was about all Zero could say to Leanne's first few statements. She was right, things were different enough to make one wonder how everyone else was handling it, but the girl looked pretty cheerful for some reason despite all of that. Not that her cheeriness bothered Zero, exactly, but it did make him kind of curious to know why she seemed so happy. One had to be pretty tough to keep up a smile in a place like this, even if it was a fake one.

He supposed some people used whatever positive outlet they could find in order to cope with situations as crazy and unpredictable as this one...and then other people were simply way more optimistic than others. Which category did Leanne fit into? Not knowing her well enough yet, it was hard for him to tell if she was smiling because she was truly optimistic versus wanting to just look optimistic for others' sakes ( ... )

Sacked lunch, like they were headed out on another Doyleton field trip. Like they were small children puffed twice their size in winter coats, spilling out onto the schoolyard with a paper bags packed lovingly by their mothers. Kirk wasn't sure what it suggested that his mind immediately jumped to another Landel's comparison before something normal, except of course that he'd been here for too damn long and hadn't done anything "normal" for even longer. He didn't count their daytime prison as normal - even less so after the soldiers had half done away with the illusion Dr. Landel had worked so hard to maintain. Of course he'd always known this was a lie, but it seemed somehow wronger now, watching it fall back into place like nothing had happened ( ... )
