Nights 59: Ruins

[ from here]-They were spilled out somewhere that she didn't recognize. This wasn't a super creepy hospital or anything like that. Or military base. Whatever, she was trying to keep up. But it was hard to keep up with what suddenly presented itself to her. It wasn't like anything he mentioned: not a cute Stepford town or anything similar; it looked ( Read more... )

The amadans trundled surefootedly along through the debris, following the sound of footsteps and the sight of the big humans silhouetted against the church. There were five of them in all; not a large group by the standards of such creatures, but this was their territory. They had the upper hand on their lost-looking prey, knowing the terrain so well. The only thing that stalled them for a moment were the first drops of water from the sky. Only a moment, though. The rain was unexpected, but not an inconvenience.

For Scott Pilgrim, however, it might have been both. He sped up, unknowingly starting to put more distance between them and the amadans. "Aw man, it's really starting to come down. Inside sounds good right now, evil priests or no," he said, reaching for Ramona's hand as they hurried toward the church.

For the record, it wasn't altogether unexpected that Scott would do this.

"This" being the hand grabbing that, if they were sixteen, might be completely awkward. Ramona hated like she was sitting again as Scott innocently grabbed her hand and pulled her forward. It was like anything else she was paying attention to, the rain included, completely went away at the feel of his fingers. Her natural reaction was to jerk backward, but instead, she stepped forward and pulled on him. Somehow, that made it okay, because even if this was hand-on-hand touching, it was almost the same as all their other moves through subspace, with her dragging him along.

It didn't make her feel any less ridiculous, though.

"At least the evil priests probably won't be expecting us, right?" she asked just before they slipped into the church itself.
