Night 59: Main Hallway, 1-Center

Oct 24, 2011 12:11

[from here]Just like last night, Vino turned the bend to find that he was first in the main hallway again. He couldn't decide if he preferred it or not. Patience wasn't his favorite virtue, but he supposed he'd have to wait. The two meeting places he would have to be at were right next to each other, right? So that was fine. If he had to wait a ( Read more... )

[from here; Zero!]

Farther down the main hall and still no sign of any monsters. At least, still no sign of any monsters she could see. It still didn't lessen any the sinking feeling in Leanne stomach, nor did it help her feel any safer than she had when she'd left her room. She was no less determined though ( ... )

[From here.]

Surprisingly, this hallway was quiet compared to the past few Zero had been through. There were some prisoners in here but no monsters trying to attack them, nor any visible corpses around. He'd be lying if he said the sight wasn't a relieving one.

Good, now he could stop for a moment to catch his breath. So inconvenient, this body's need for air. As a Reploid, he could fight and run with little limit, but as a human...ahh, why was he complaining now? There was no time for that, he had a mission to accomplish. Where would be the best place to go to find out what was causing all of this? It was hard to think of an answer to that, though, as there was still so little that he knew of this place. Tonight was only making it worse, what with the pink glow everywhere and the sudden influx in monsters...

Speaking of monsters, was that a faint clicking noise he was hearing right now?

It was. Damn. He flipped around to face the direction the noise was coming from, gripping his now blood-stained pipe tightly. What was it this ( ... )

Going somewhere other than to the area with the Sun Room and the Cafeteria did seem like the best, though there might have been more to those particular places during the nighttime. With no soldiers hanging around, she'd probably even manage to get a good look at it, for once. As long as she was careful, she could--

Leanne gasped, her train of thought completely derailed by the feeling of someone bumping into her. "Hey!" she cried out, stumbling some, catching herself on the nearest wall.

What the hell? What had just happened?

She turned around, heart beating frantically in her chest, only barely registering the words being said. No, her attention was taken by something else entirely, by the person who'd just interrupted her. At first, all she could see was hair, and a lot of it. As she got her breathing back under control, however, she finally made out the person attached to all that hair-- a shorter guy, practically out of nowhere ( ... )

Zero, honestly, had hardly paid any attention to the woman's horrified reaction after bumping into her. He was more focused on the clicking noises and the fact that they were both in danger here rather than if he'd accidentally upset her or not. He heard what she said, at the very least, although he didn't look back at her when he replied. "Yes. Don't make any sudden moves." His tone was sharp, probably making him sound like he was irritated with her, but it was only because he was concerned. It hadn't been his plan to put someone else in danger...but he couldn't help it now. Get out of this mess first, then worry about everything else later ( ... )

That, more than anything he'd said to her so far, Leanne understood well. He was right. If something was coming after them, they just couldn't afford to be careless at all. A momentary lapse in attention could be enough to get them both seriously hurt, or worse. And she didn't exactly have the first aid kit they always carried around back home with her. Any injuries they got... Would the soldiers help them, after everything else?

She had to suppress a snort at the thought, shaking her head as she did so. They'd help, my butt. No, so far, it seemed like Leanne could really only rely on the other prisoners in this place ( ... )

Just how many of the beasts were there? More and more appeared out of the darkness until Zero could see about five or six of them altogether, maybe even more. Despite this unsettling sight, he remained calm and did not move until one of the rats decided to lead a group attack against the pair of prisoners. And here, he would take the woman's advice well. The first rat got to enjoy the full force of the metal pipe against its body and went flying off to the side. The second and third rat met the same fate, and the ones that aimed to bite at his legs or that tried to move around him to get at the person he was protecting were kicked away ( ... )

Jackpot! So the flashlight had been useful after all. The moment Leanne raised it, one of the rats fled, back into the darkness. Looked like it was pretty safe to say the rats were not fans of the light. Not exactly something she had a lot of experience with, monsters that shied away from light, but aside from her companion's metal pipe, it was the only defense she had at the moment. He was doing a good enough job keeping them back, but no one could last like that forever. And at the rate the creatures kept coming after them, she'd count herself lucky if they could hold out for more than a few minutes.

She had to help, however she could.

...Or she would have, had the other rats also turned tail when the light hit them. "Oh, you filthy..." she ground out, clutching the flashlight closer to herself. No telling how useful it would be now, but it was the only weapon left to her now, while she was nowhere near her guns. If only ( ... )

Easier said than done, Zero thought to himself as he swatted another rat away. With these numbers, it'd be very difficult to distract all of the rats long enough to allow the pair to escape. But what about just one of them? He could continue keeping the rats at bay to give the woman a chance to run, and then, once she was out of harm's way, the group of rats would be much easier to deal with. Looks like that could be the best course of action right now...

...That is, it had been the best plan in the once-Reploid's mind before he finally noticed a second rat turning and scurrying away as quickly as it could, acting like it was terrified of something ( ... )

Leanne bit her lip, eyebrows furrowed. Still holding onto the flashlight tightly, she glanced back at her current companion from time to time, though she didn't dare keep her eyes off the rats for too long. Even if the flashlight had scared off one or two and he was managing to hold his own against... a lot more than that, there were still there, attacking, and she had no way of knowing if there were any more monsters lurking the hallway.

She let out a frustrated sigh, shaking her head. She hated feeling this useless, hated knowing that all she could do was just stand there while someone else took care of things, hated it so much.

The next thing she heard only hammered in the point further.

Run? He was kidding, right? She wasn't about to just abandon him to deal with these things by himself, not when she could still do something, anything"What?" she asked, not quite able to believe what he'd just said. If she were honest with herself though, she knew it was only to be expected. He had to have realized that, short of clubbing the ( ... )

What part of run didn't she understand? She was human - well alright, he was human too, but his Reploid strength had somewhat returned here so it didn't count - she was unarmed, and, most importantly, she was in danger. Quite frankly, Zero couldn't care less whether she was able to help or not. He'd dragged her into this mess, so the least he could do now was to find a way to get her out of it. She did not need to be complicating things by resisting his attempts to do that.

Now, if he had realized the reason why those rats had fled - and why another one was darting away now - he would probably have a different mindset. As it was, however, he was determined to protect her by getting her out of harm's way, no matter what.

"I can handle this! Go!" he snapped, as if barking out an order to a lower ranking soldier. Politeness was nothing to be concerned with here, it was merely--tch! Interrupted--one of the injured rats suddenly made a leap for his shoulder, but it was met with a strong swing of the pipe and fell down to the floor, ( ... )

No way. Just no way. She didn't care if he could swing a pipe around at the rats, if she left him alone... Leanne was sure she wouldn't be able to find him again. The rats were a lot smaller than a lot of monsters she'd seen, but even then, no one could hold out against them forever. At the rate they just kept coming, they could easily overwhelm someone.

And she'd seen, and heard, of enough Hunters who'd gone in over their heads, and how they'd ended up.

Any temptation she might have had to just take him at his word and run vanished at that thought. She wouldn't, couldn't, be responsible for anything happening to him.

Leanne shook her head, ready to dig her heels in and make him run with her, if she had to. "You can't handle it forever!" She pulled in a lungful of air, squaring her shoulders. "If I run, you have to come with me too! If you don't, you'll...!" She stopped, her blood turning cold, when she heard movement way too close to her. She hesitated only a second, before turning her head ( ... )

There must have been at least five more of the things coming after them now, maybe even more, along with the injured two from the last group still desperately trying to attack. Zero wasn't counting, only gritting his teeth and starting to wonder if this strategy of fighting them off was even worth it anymore.

Any hopes that it would eventually work out were shattered at the sound of his companion's shriek. No! He flipped around, expecting the worst, but saw that she had been able to save herself from one of the rats. It was only relieving for a half second. He was failing to protect her! If there were so many of the beasts now that they were able to get past him so easily ( ... )
