Night 58: West Wing, South Hall 2-B

He brushed past people in the hallway and headed forward down the dark corridor. It was silent here, and dark, save for the light from his lantern. He picked up his pace, stalking down the hallway as quickly as he'd allow himself without breaking into an actual run.

He was torn between impatience and dread. He needed to get to Souji and see that he was put to rest properly, not left in the clutches of the people who had killed him, but he had no idea what he was going to do once he got there and had to deal with the reality of the situation. He'd handled death before, was certainly no stranger to corpses. But they'd never been the bodies of people he cared about as much as he cared for Souji, and he'd never been in a situation like this--trapped in a place where he had no authority and no control.

Before long, he reached a door. Unlike the others he'd encountered, this one did not open easily to admit him. He frowned, remembering the other night and the way Souji had had to use a key to gain admittance to certain rooms. There'd been no mention of that in the note, and he didn't have access to any keys, besides. He scowled at it for a moment before deciding brute force was probably going to be the best option. He reached for the katana, then thought better of it, not wanting to damage the blade. Instead, he hefted the lantern in his hand. Deciding it was sturdy enough, he brought it down hard on the lock a few times in quick succession. The light flickered and dimmed, but he finally heard something break and was able to pull the door open.
