Ema entered the stairwell and pointed her flashlight directly downward, slowing her pace to make sure she didn't trip and fall in the darkness. Briefly, she wondered if Mr. Dent knew about the nightblindness that came with her 'sleep study'. She knew that Zero had no way of knowing (and had kept that fact to herself out of guilt when he'd first found her), but the fact of the matter was that it would be a complication once the group moved into unfamiliar territory. It frustrated her to feel so vulnerable, helpless, and useless--and it was a constant reminder of what the institute was capable of, regardless of who was in charge of it. When they weren't pressed for time, Ema resolved to talk to Zero about the nighttime experiments and the special counseling and Dr. Landel himself. The newer arrival deserved warning ( ... )

This was something he'd done before, though, and it was low risk compared to how his last few nights had been spent. It also wasn't of much help to him personally, but maybe he needed this: something productive but not absolutely insane. Staying in his room all night would only make him feel worse, so at least he'd found something to do with his time ( ... )
