[from here]The confusion had fizzled out his anger momentarily. But that didn't make him any less determined to press forward. If anything, Snow was treating it like a random lapse of concentration and was plenty ready to forget about it. Which was pretty damn easy once he got himself focused on a particular subject ( Read more... )

Ema entered the stairwell and pointed her flashlight directly downward, slowing her pace to make sure she didn't trip and fall in the darkness. Briefly, she wondered if Mr. Dent knew about the nightblindness that came with her 'sleep study'. She knew that Zero had no way of knowing (and had kept that fact to herself out of guilt when he'd first found her), but the fact of the matter was that it would be a complication once the group moved into unfamiliar territory. It frustrated her to feel so vulnerable, helpless, and useless--and it was a constant reminder of what the institute was capable of, regardless of who was in charge of it. When they weren't pressed for time, Ema resolved to talk to Zero about the nighttime experiments and the special counseling and Dr. Landel himself. The newer arrival deserved warning ( ... )

It felt good, he had to admit, to be the one taking the lead. It wasn't that he'd been a follower during the whole basement disaster, but he also hadn't taken charge as much as he was used to. Harvey was a leader by nature, but that sometimes clashed with his own practical nature. He was fearless, but he'd learned a thing or two about danger. Sticking his neck had led to him getting half of his face seared off, after all.

This was something he'd done before, though, and it was low risk compared to how his last few nights had been spent. Zero followed Mr. Dent closely, remaining vigilant as the group went along. He, too, noticed Ema's strange walking pattern - how could he not notice when she kept bumping into him? - and he glanced over at her out of concern. (Concern that was poorly expressed through facial expressions, unfortunately, but he was still concerned.) Why was Ema walking like that? He wanted to ask if she was alright, but he didn't want to interrupt the conversation between her and Mr. Dent. His looking over at her was probably enough to show what he was thinking, anyway ( ... )
