Sleep. Right. When was the last time Nigredo had a proper nap? That might have explained the slip. He turned back long enough to watch his brother as they exited doors and stepped into the main corridor, feeling more tired than was probably necessary. "Yeah, I guess..." He fingered the hatchet for a bit as his mind attempted to stabilize.
Fortunately, Albedo offered a distraction, which Nigredo picked up without hesitation. "Oh, uh," he began, lacking his characteristic eloquence. "The device was small, probably something you could carry in your hands." Oh, no. That was far from Albedo's question, wasn't it? He opened his mouth to continue.
But are you sure that's all right? You're gonna tell him about something that gives back your powers when that's what screwed you both up in the first place?
To shut it again in fear, head whirling back a second time. He had heard that, hadn't he? It had to be a voice.
His brother was actually affected by this. Enough to slip his words and delay answering. Enough for another pulse of surprise to slip through, sharp and prominent. Coupled with fear, dark and throbbing. Albedo's eyes shut momentarily, the emotions not his own slipping through him. Even now, something like that was....
If he was honest, he was less focused on the apparent conversation at hand than he likely should have been.
The halls near their rooms were narrow, but even with the large coat trailing behind him, it didn't take long for them to reach one of the larger hallways. From here it was almost a straight shot all the way to the entrance.
He would follow Chise regardless, but one thing kept tugging at him. She'd given him plenty of logical reasons for wanting to find the doctor and Marc; the military didn't sit well with her for one, but she'd hardly seemed bothered about whether or not Fai had a reason for coming with her. He had several excuses and reasons in mind, of course, but it did make him feel a bit guilty, to think that she trusted him so much. Whether or not the trust was misplaced.
"That way and then through the front doors?" he asked, "or should we try going over the fence this way?" he asked, pointing down both halls.
As of now, Fai was the only one she could share her plan with without being told how dangerous it could be for a small girl like her. Chise knew that on the night she attacked both Kurogane and Fai, they saw the power she possessed and understood what she was capable of. The fact that Fai was willing to follow her eased out her guilt; he trusted her despite her actions in the past, and in return, she trusted him.
"It would be faster if we tried going over the fence outside. I'm not tall enough so I'll probably need help getting over the fence," she replied, then headed towards the exit.
Ilia bit her lip when Rose mentioned the promise she had made Lily. Empty promises could sometimes hurt worse than physical pain. But it showed that Rose either had faith in herself to look after her friend, or she was much more tender-hearted than Ilia had be led previously to believe.
Why the hell had someone thought to bring this precious girl here? Rose believed in magical powers and honestly cared for their friends; a place like Landel's could only break a person like that down. The anger burned even hotter within her, and Ilia sped up her pace.
"Let's find her quickly then. We'll turn that falsehood into a truth."
Talking to Ilia was weird. She was reasonable, and intelligent, but every once in a while she resembled maternal. Not the kind of maternal Rose's mom exhibited, but the apple-pie kind, the kind that didn't come from a store. Like John and his dad, but without separating confectioneries into affectionate and projectile weapons of parental affection.

The pair slid to the outside hall, and Albedo glanced to his sibling, shadows flickering over the remaining concern. "Though you were saying...?"

They'd reached the door.
"Yes. I'm going out there now."
