Okita heard Hijikata open a door somewhere in the other hallway and his footsteps grew more muffled. He'd gone inside. His eyes would be off the main hallway and in straw sandals, Okita's footfalls were a lot quieter than the vice-commander's.
Wasting no time, he slipped back through the bathroom door and took off for the infirmary.
