It was starting to get dark as Indy turned back down Main Street, fed and re-medicated but no less eager to get out of the cold for that. He picked his next destination the same way he'd picked the one at noon: someone he needed to talk to headed into a shop and he followed suit. This time it was Lunge and Ryuuzaki, joined at the hip as usual. Indy jogged ahead to reach the door just behind them, breathing out white puffs on the way.

He nodded at the older woman and the girl behind the counter (the latter looked like she might remember him; Indy wondered if she'd thought of anything else about the town worth knowing) and shut the door firmly behind him as he moved to meet the two men. "Afternoon," he greeted them. "Nothing like a book on a day like this."

"This is where I was planning to stop," L replied, then paused. When he spoke again, his tone was more thoughtful. "Don't you think it's weird that this town doesn't seem to have a library? No newspaper, no archives that we know of. That sheriff's office, but no mayor's office or town hall, at least not one that's accessible to us within the area we're allowed to explore. It's like there's no local government of any kind apart from the vague suggestion of law enforcement, and no proof that the law is ever enforced, or even that anyone ever breaks it. That is, it would be weird under ordinary circumstances. Under the circumstances as we understand them, though...." His mouth quirked as he allowed his words to trail off ( ... )

There. He wasn't the only one at whom last night's notes had been eating away. L had been here twice, just the same as he had; had he noticed these things on their first trip, or only now that they had reason to see things through more cynical eyes? At a glance the town was little more than an unnervingly clean-cut throwback, but now that the sheen had worn off it would be interesting to see where the cracks lay- or rather, did not lie ( ... )

"The basement," Indy replied shortly. That ought to be explanation enough, but since these contacts were based on exchanging information, he continued, "There are four rooms down there built around the four classical elements. 'Fire' didn't end well." And at Lunge's comment, he went on, "Anywhere else, it might be bad. Here I imagine it'll take a few days or a week to heal." He couldn't complain, but the strangeness of that rapid healing still wasn't lost on him ( ... )

Just what did you do in a town like this, anyway? So far, Battler's day seemed to be divided between eating and aimless wandering, which was fine to a point, but as much as he could enjoy the simplicity and short mental vacation, he was starting to get restless. It wasn't like he was unfriendly or didn't like meeting new people-just the opposite, in fact-but when it was only that and no semblance of familiarity to be found anywhere, it could start to get kind of rough.

On the other hand, this place looked pretty promising. Where he might normally delve directly into the books, in this case, his first impulse was actually to take a look at the newspapers, but what he found wasn't exactly all that useful. Nothing but mundane events, and no indication of where or even when they were. What kind of a newspaper didn't have the date on it, anyway....? Looking in other sections held similar results. That was .... weird, and honestly kind of creepy, especially considering it was more than likely intentional ( ... )

Some conversation just a little while earlier had been nice, but what (or who, rather) she had been looking for wasn't there. Lion was almost beginning to wonder if she'd ever find him at all-- just how hard could it be? The town may have been small, so theoretically it should have been nothing but easy to locate someone else... No, it really wasn't a stretch to believe that it was entirely possible to keep missing a person, too, given that the town was just big enough for that.

Lion wasn't often frustrated, but her moments weren't exactly rare. Right now, she could feel it, but she hadn't blamed anyone but herself.

Nonetheless, there was still some part of the day left. She could still make good use of the time.

Sooner or later Lion ended up in a bookstore; she wasn't quite expecting her cousin to be around here, as he never did seem the sort to particularly enjoy reading... Well, it never hurt to try, either. After all, she was trying to be thorough here ( ... )

... Well, that was surprising. The town itself was small and quiet, and it wasn't like there were that many people from the institute, but on the other hand, he could only claim to be acquainted with a few people, so Battler couldn't say that he'd been expecting anyone to call out to him. He looked up from the book to whoever was speaking. Something about their face was a little familiar, wasn't it? It reminded him of something, but he honestly wasn't sure what. ..... Was he just imagining that? ... No, he must have been. Any vague feelings aside, he was almost certain he'd never seen this person before ( ... )

There was a beat, but in that moment several things had begun to cross Lion's mind.

...So it really was true that Battler hadn't remembered-- no, known her was the correct term to use here. He nearly began to ask who she was, hadn't he? That on top of their exchange on the bulletin... It was an outcome she had dreaded a little to face, but the truth was Lion knew she should have expected it. This place had brought others in from all sorts of universes, with time and placement being as unpredictable as a fly's direction; that's how Lion was beginning to understand it, at any rate. And so, naturally, Battler had come from a universe, Fragment-- whatever they may be called-- that was not hers.

The only one Lion existed in ( ... )

Fortunately, it didn't take long to deliver Peter to the diner and the time of day meant that it wasn't too crowded in there. Not that the town seemed to have enough people to make a serious crowd at any point, but...

In any case, he managed to grab Peter a makeshift icepack. His ankle didn't look too bad, so Sam figured he'd be recovered within a couple of days or so. Probably less, given this place's sped up healing. He still had no theories on how they were pulling that one off, but on the list of things to solve, that one was pretty low ( ... )

Peter's answer was so normal, Sam couldn't help raising an eyebrow at him. He knew Peter had said he was one hundred percent supernatural-free, but that was exactly what Sam said to everyone, as well. That said a lot about how much weight those types of claims carried. Of course, being steeped in weird crap didn't mean giving up living as a civilian. He'd done it for a pretty long time himself, after all, and just 'cause it hadn't worked out for him didn't mean everyone else would be in the same boat ( ... )
