Taura's stomach was growling, but she could be patient. Her nails were still tacky; she'd rather wear nail polish and eat lunch than vice versa

[continued from here]It was a little weird. Everything looked nice and all covered with the snow, but it made it a little hard to make out details. And from here, the town just seemed so... barren. And empty. And tiny. He couldn't imagine living in a place like this. The buildings were all so small. Were all Pulse towns supposed to be like this? Not really what he'd call "savage" but definitely not comfortable either

Did Lightning dare tell Snow just how they had descended from Cocoon on a Pulsian airship? That would mean possibly having to move backward from there- about the hidden vestige they'd found themselves in after escaping from the Palamecia, about the revelations from Barthandelus and Raines...
She would have to tell him... eventually, though for now she was silent, brooding, lost in thought until the man commented directly on the village. That still got just a simple "Yeah" out of her in turn as she walked alongside him though, her body language stiff, tone stoic and flat.
The more Lightning saw of the town, the more awkward she began to feel as well. This place was... lifeless, though in a different way than the scattered ruins she'd seen in the short time before being dragged here. The colors were muted even without the snow, the faces of the buildings flat and unadorned

"So if this street was the basement, we came in up there." S.T. started, pointing to the opposite end of Main Street, where the buses had let out, to stand in for the entrance to the ballroom. "Go this way, there's a Sphinx asking questions," he said, pointing at Kitchen Fixin's. "Solve the riddle, get a prize. I'd bet it's the same for the maze" -- that was a building with a For Sale sign out front -- "but we didn't get a chance to find out."
He swiveled on his good heel, and pointed to the movie rental shop. "That's where we were last night. Some kind of automatic battle. Win the fight, prize number two." The last building was the bar. "That was where the other guys went. Same prize, different challenge. Sounded like some kind of obstacle course, but I didn't get the details."
Following both Sangamon and the conversation, the Scarecrow nodded as the surrounding buildings were used to illustrate his explanation of the basement. With riddles and mazes and battles and obstacles, it sounded like an awful lot of work for prizes. But were they worth it? It was true that he'd faced a Wicked Witch for the chance of getting some brains, but could- or would, rather- Wizard Landel or General Aguilar offer the same? Surely a trip home wasn't available.
He was about to ask, but decided to save it for once they were inside- his own arm wasn't enjoying the weather, and he was sure Sangamon's legs were hurting if they needed a cane for support. He picked the Crossroad's, as the open door looked inviting enough.
