[from here]S.T. switched on his flashlight as he started down the stairs. The torches flickered, and they were sitting ducks. Not tripping over his own shoelaces would be a plus

-- and then with a gush of nausea they stumbled into a place where the air itself felt different. Colder, damper, a little heavier -- hopefully they had indeed ended up where they wanted to go.
Sasuke snapped the hand that held both swords into a defensive position as quickly as he could -- as unwieldy as it was to carry anything that way, it was better to be armed at all in case there was something in here. Sharingan spinning for a second (and the drain of it a familiar frustration; why last night and not tonight?), he scanned the room.
Empty of enemies, which was a good thing, but also evidently empty of the others he'd hoped to meet already here. Perhaps they'd been earlier than he thought, or it simply took that much time to get to the basement each night.
Next time, he intended to use the ring for everyone he was travelling with, Aidou's reluctance or not.
Apparently he'd been wrong about arriving before the others. A look of surprise crossed Sai's face for a moment, but it was gone soon after as he made his way toward the familiar faces. They were ninja. The fact that they didn't leave much trace of themselves on the way in was simply a testament to their skill.
In truth, he was glad to be back with the others now. While he was fully capable of leading a party, he did far better in the role of follower. This had been proven time and time again. Not to mention he had no idea of what was going to happen from here on out. They'd collected the items that were apparently necessary to get beyond the doors, but what then? Another test, hadn't the creature said?
He nodded to Sasuke, letting the others know that he was ready to proceed when they were. "Hello, Sasuke. Sakura."

It had taken longer than the outer routes would have, but eventually Brook and Sai were down the stairs to the ballroom. Brook could only assume that Sakura and Sasuke's presence there meant they had taken another route or else had gotten a remarkably early start to their own trip down.
"I hope you two didn't have any difficulties on the way here?" he questioned first to be fair as his attention looked around for the last of their group. That blond woman was not yet there, though he did not know if that was supposed to be the case. He was content not to be as in the know as the ninja but could worry just as well when he didn't know what was going on. He was still a bit confused as to why they had returned to the basement in the first place, though he could bet it had something to do with what Sakura had gotten the night before.
The strange sensation as they were transported from one place to another in the blink of an eye was a strange one, that was for certain. It took a moment or two for her to gain her bearings when they arrived, assess the situation, their location, and any possible enemies that might get in their way

The other two arrived without significant delay, which brought the question of time back to forefront -- he'd thought he'd made good time to the meeting point, and Sakura hadn't seemed to feel as if she'd been unreasonably late. Had Sai started much earlier, or was this simply another casualty of the unnatural flexibility of time in the Institute
