Leela thought the gesture was sort of sweet, almost courtly in an unfamiliar-with-human-culture kind of way. She thought, from both his name and nationality, species, affiliation, or whatever it turned out a VUX was, that he might be about as far from his rightful time and place as she was.
"VUX military, I don't know that one. I'm from New New York, and the thirty-first century." She liked to get that out of the way early on. It was nice to feel that the person she was talking to wouldn't automatically assume she was a legitimate mental patient, for a change.
"I could give kicking it a try," she suggested. "I'm pretty strong." If it didn't work, it would probably still be enjoyable. She realized she hadn't reclaimed her hand, and did so now, with a little bit of not-entirely-unpleasant awkwardness, as if she might giggle. "Lead the way!"
If kicking failed, even with the extra sturdiness her snazzy new boots provided, hunting for explosives was a really good way to get into trouble. It occurred to Leela that she might have been

"Ah, that doesn't surprise me. Most people here haven't heard of me, or my species." With a slight sigh. It just didn't make sense. "The thirty-first century..." What time scale was that, VUX or human? Either way, that actually sounded ahead of his current timeframe. "I'm sorry, I'm not sure if we're using the same time scale. Have humans achieved interstellar flight?" That would at least give him more of a frame of reference
