It had been odd for Castiel to come across a human that he had so much in common with, though it had occurred to him that Kratos might not have been as human as he'd appeared. It wasn't something that he'd managed to ask, partly because the subject hadn't come up as smoothly as it had in some of his other conversations. Thus far, revealing what he was to the few people he'd trusted the information with hadn't gotten him into any disadvantageous situations. Maybe he didn't need to guard himself as much as the Winchesters had taught him to, at least not here

Stefan followed alongside Elena for as long (and as close) as he could while the soldiers directed them back to their rooms, and departed from her with only a mouthed I love you. If the nurses before had been willing to brush off his sudden bouts of aggression with firm words and placatory smiles, he strongly doubted he'd get off so lucky with these men. By this point in the day, he no longer needed help walking - a good thing too, if he was planning to do some hunting tonight. He had yet to encounter one of the creatures which supposedly roamed the halls, but what he'd heard was enough for him to want every bit of the unnatural strength left to him. If not for his own benefit, then Edward's - as much as the other vampire had said he didn't mind, Stefan was tired of being a burden to him

It seemed that his concerns had been a bit too severe, as it wasn't long before Stefan showed himself once more. Castiel had just been taking a testing bite of the pasta when the door opened, so the interruption gave him good reason to ignore his dinner once more. He glanced toward the young man, noticing his somewhat haggard appearance

Stefan knew that tone. It was one Elena used on him often, especially in those precarious days when he was still desperately trying to keep his secret from her, and she kept questioning every half-truth and evasion he offered. He hadn't even needed that one explosive fight between them to know that he wasn't a good liar, and she wasn't the type to let go

That two-word phrase, not to mention the fact that it was repeated, made it clear that Stefan meant the exact opposite. This was a strange way that humans tried to hide what was already obvious, and it was something Castiel had learned about extensively due to the time he'd spent with Sam and Dean. Neither one ever wished to admit that there was a problem even if it was already clear to everyone. It was frustrating, even if the angel understood the matter of pride and how it related.
In the end, there was no real way to force Stefan to talk. Castiel could have threatened him, could have cited the fact that if something went wrong he could be impacted as well. But seeing how they were still relative strangers, it didn't seem necessary. His roommate was not in a good state, but he was keeping a hold on whatever was plaguing him. So long as that remained the case, Castiel could only get so involved
