Claude had been trying to hope for the best and prepare for the worst, but he hadn't anticipated the shift ending on such an abrupt and shocking note.

What was more, the nurse who'd constantly escorted him from shift to shift for the past month or so had been replaced by a stern, curt soldier. Claude had heard them order all the staff to the second floor, but they hadn't said what the military planned to do with them after that. He wondered if she'd be all right. As much as the staff bothered him, he didn't want to see any of the nurses or orderlies get hurt.

And Landel -- Claude was still reeling from what he and Tear had witnessed with their own two eyes. He'd been on the verge of getting up from his seat the moment he saw that bastard enter the room, but the soldiers had done what the patients themselves could only dream of doing. They'd actually turned on him and tossed him out. Yet seeing the Head Doctor get his just desserts didn't bring the rush of victory or satisfaction Claude had been hoping for ( ... )

Wow, was this not the best time to be touching Matt, not even slightly. He kept having to jerk his arm out of the guard's hand, since he obviously had a problem with maintaining personal space from supposed crazy people. Of course, it probably didn't help that Matt kept looking over his shoulder for Mello, in case they decided to pull something sneaky a night earlier than they anticipated; it made him twitch, to be this far away from the blond right now.

He still couldn't believe Mello had started to try something, though, right there in front of all the soldiers. Sure, Landel was right there, and it was the perfect opportunity, but without his gun, Mello was just another scrawny blond kid, and he had to face that fact in here. It was probably why those bugs worked so well; it was a fact he probably had to face every single day. Good thing I was there to save his ass, he thought, and had to smile as they approached his cell door. For once. Cool. The soldier opened it for him and let him step inside on his own; a small miracle, as far ( ... )

Claude had been watching Mason carefully. He didn't appear injured, but the experiments here didn't always leave a mark. Still, he wasn't sure how welcome any questions would be. He'd been on the other end of Mason's intrusive curiosity before, and it hadn't been pleasant. But Claude was still concerned about how he was doing.

Before he could ask after him, though, Mason pretty much read his mind. Claude raised his eyebrows in surprise. He hadn't expected to hear that.

"A false alarm?" he echoed, not even bothering to hide his confusion. "What do you mean?"

Claude had never heard of someone getting spared from either "sleep studies" or brainwashing once they'd been taken from their room. Not that he was complaining, of course! If that was actually the case, there was no denying that he'd feel relieved for his roommate. But, on the other hand, it almost sounded too good to be true.

"Yeah, it's weird," he tried to mumble through a mouthful of spaghetti, but quit when he figured out it wasn't working out too well. Chewing and swallowing as quickly as he could, Matt took a deep breath before going on: "The whole night is a blank; I don't remember anything, and I don't feel any different." Finished speaking, he started shoveling more spaghetti into his mouth, breathing deeply through his nose as he chewed this time.

Swallowing before attempting to speak this time, he shot Claude a grin. "I slept too much today, but I don't think I've been brainwashed. I still think Landel's full of crap and that I don't belong here."

Still. Claude probably couldn't be reassured of anything. No one ever knew what they did to people upstairs; Matt could have been a threat to his roommate after being taken up there - if that's where he went. He still wasn't too clear on that ( ... )

His discussion with Goku had not been particularly insightful or interesting, although his behavior made him wonder what sort of experiences he'd had before being brought to the Institute. Of course, that hardly mattered in light of the final moments of the shift. With little warning, more soldiers had stormed into the greenhouse and ordered the majority of Landel's staff out of the area. Furthermore, from what he'd gathered, something had happened in the sun room. Unfortunately, Spock didn't have time to get the full details from any witnesses, nor was the soldier escorting him to his room willing to provide any answers.

He did, however, manage to find an opportunity to see Kirk's note addressed to the Enterprise crew. It sounded as though the captain wished to speak with himself and Dr. McCoy. After the events over the past few days, Spock believed that was the logical course of action for any commanding officer. He was still uncertain of what Nyota intended to do this coming nightshift, but Spock had no doubt that she would ( ... )

Isaac Mendez. Claire Bennet. Elle Bishop. Mohinder Suresh. Peter and Nathan Petrelli.

Sylar was starting to think that every brain he'd ever coveted had gotten sucked into this place - unfortunately with all corresponding bodies attached. It was a good thing he'd never been on board with the idea of "getting home" so much as "getting free," because at this point, he had to wonder if there was much at home for him to get back to. It looked like Landel was keen on collecting people with abilities almost as much as Sylar was, and given what they'd tried to do on that operating table...

He shook his head, pointing his thoughts in a different direction. Despite the significant percentage of patients whose talents ventured into the realm of "abnormal," there were a good chunk of normals who'd turned up too, Noah Bennet included. Did that mean there were particular dimensions that Landel and his cronies zeroed in on? It sure seemed like more people here had a buddy from home than not ( ... )

Spock looked up from his partially-eaten meal in time to see a soldier closing the door, leaving Gabriel behind. He gazed at him for a moment, noting that there were no new injuries, and returned his attention to his meal. That was not to say he was in perfect health, of course (there was still his experiment from several nights ago to consider), but there was no way for Spock to learn those sorts of details without Gabriel agreeing to speak more freely ( ... )

Sylar raised an eyebrow as Spock delivered his counter with all the deadpan delivery of a trained comedian - and none of the humor. But... okay - fair. That was fair. Which just served to underline how even the damn soldiers would've been more interesting company at dinner than Sylar's current roommate was. How did Spock handle prisoners on his spaceship, then? Did he logic them into incarceration ( ... )

Scary soldier guys aside, that last shift had been turning out to be pretty peaceful until more of them stormed into the Greenhouse. That was when things got weird -- well, weirder than normal, seeing how being stuck in a human body was the epitome of weird in the first place. All Woody could do was watch as they ordered most of the nurses and orderlies to leave the room. What did that even mean? Were they not going to lead them around between shifts anymore?

As it turned out, Woody got his answer soon enough. The woman who'd vaguely reminded him of Andy's mother had been replaced by a man wearing a uniform and carrying a gun. His demeanor reminded him a bit of Sarge from back home -- but, unlike Sarge, this man wasn't working for any of them. No, now they'd gone from "patients" to actual prisoners.

Great, he inwardly grumbled. This is just great. None of this would have happened if that idiot from this morning hadn't decided that starting a food fight was a fantastic idea. He wondered if these guy took names of all the ( ... )

It probably said way too much about how settled Wally had gotten into a routine here that everything that had just happened now had really, really spooked him. Ever since he'd gotten here, Landel had been the big bad guy that few had seen and fewer had gotten close to. Aloof, unseen, and untouchable ( ... )

When Wally stepped into the room, the anxiety practically melted away from Woody's face. It was good to see he was okay and in good shape. After what happened this morning, he'd been afraid he'd walk in wearing bandages or something!

Of course, Woody's relief didn't last long -- not when he was reminded of how rotten today had been. "Yeah, tell me about it," he said with a snort.

First, he'd woken up with the unnerving realization that he hadn't remembered any of last night, then he'd had to look at creepy soldiers everywhere he went. Then he'd gotten beaten, gassed, and locked up for a good portion of the day. As if that hadn't already been terrifying enough, Woody could only watch, jaw dropped, as those military guys stormed in and ordered the nurses out of the Greenhouse. And on top of that? Now Landel was--

His thoughts screeched to a halt as he took a moment to process that.

Wait. Wait.

Woody suddenly fixed Wally with an uneasy look. "Landel?" he asked. "What, you mean he's not here anymore?"

"Wait, you didn't know?" Wally said, as thrown off by Woody's confusion as Woody apparently was by his comment.

Wait, wait a minute. The last shift, hadn't they scheduled all the guys for outside somewhere? Wally had opted out because he hadn't felt like playing along and at least inside was warmer and had a better choice of company (namely the woman he'd met, Ruby) but if Woody had been where he'd supposed to have been, then of course he wouldn't know.

"Right, sorry. In the sun room, Landel came out to talk to the soldier guys and man was he mad. I mean, I've never even seen him before and I've been here for ages, so that part was weird enough, but seeing him actually angry for a change?"

He shook his head, still having difficulty seeing it even though he'd seen it.

"I didn't know what to make of it."

The walk back to his room was awkward and silent. Normally Brainiac 5 would have at least had the odd comment from his nurse, something that would have fit with the cover that he was mentally unwell and, well, something that would have made him feel like he was being treated as a person. The soldiers were rigid and silent, and he felt oddly reminded of Coluans, devoid of emotion or interest in anything outside of what was deemed important and necessary ( ... )

"I was there," he affirmed. Under different circumstances, Brainiac 5 might have seen fit to slip in a comment about how he'd seen Peter there as well in order to try and get an idea of who the girl he'd been speaking to was, but they had more important concerns now ( ... )

While he wasn't at all used to the goings-on in this place, even a blind idiot could tell that something had quite drastically changed, and suddenly at that. There hadn't been any explanation for the sudden appearance of more soldiers, or the disappearance of the 'normal' staff from the greenhouse at the end of the shift, just the obvious sense of things being even more wrong than they had been when Hijikata had woken up in this ridiculous place that morning ( ... )
