Day 54: Recreational Field

And thus concluded a perfect start to a perfect day. Making him explode from every facial orifice was a totally justified response to Peter not doing anything at all.

The nurses' hearts had defrosted just enough to permit them a change of clothes and a desperately needed wipe down. Nurse Joyce - Rachel had been apologizing the whole way back to ( Read more... )

With no one around him that he knew, Guy figured it was best to keep to himself. The soldiers were already on high alert, so he wouldn't be surprised if they got upset at patients just for talking amongst themselves while the roll call was going on. The whole thing was so regimented that it was pretty tedious, especially for someone like Guy had had never officially been in any military ranks.

Still, he knew how to lay low, so this part was easy enough, at the very least. It looked like the patients who responded to their name promptly and without an attitude were then left to themselves, so...

But that was when he heard a familiar voice sound right behind him in a whisper, causing him to stand stiff-straight and clench his fists. It was a good thing that it was Okita who was responsible and not someone like Anise, though, since that really would have caused him to shriek in the middle of something that was supposed to be strict and orderly ( ... )

Okita didn't act like they were strange for staying in a night to just talk. That was a relief. Claude wondered how many people occasionally took a night to discuss things or make more detailed plans for later. Given how highly organized and tightly-knit some of the patients here were, there was a chance it happened more often than Claude originally would have thought.

Claude did his best to return Okita's smile, even if it was hard to meet his gaze right then. "There was a lot we needed to go over," he said with his own nod. Then, with a brightened expression, he added, "But now we can really focus on finding a way out of here. I'm anxious to dig up some new leads ( ... )

Guy still wasn't smiling and that set Okita on edge. Had their conversation topic for the night been that bad? The swordsman was prone to keeping secrets certainly, but Okita wasn't used to seeing his roommate unable to rebound from something so small as being asked what they'd done the night before. Normally he was so upbeat when they met, able to roll with the punches the Institute seemed to dole out on a daily basis.

And Claude, too. Neither of them were meeting his gaze or returning his smiles and that dampened his mood significantly. It hadn't been his intention to make them unhappy and it seemed that was exactly what he'd done.

But Claude seemed to perk up again, suggesting that they could uncover new things about the Institute so Okita turned his attention temporarily toward his roommate's friend. "I hope so," he replied. "These soldiers being here makes me a little uneasy. You don't think they're going to try anymore more than they did this morning, do you?"

All in all, Guy's feelings about the matter mirrored Claude's. He was glad that they'd worked things out, but now it was time to get back to business. That was why he'd made such specific plans with Anise, after all. He didn't know if heading over the wall was the right choice, but they had to start somewhere. In fact, he would have mentioned his plans to Claude right then if he hadn't been distracted by Okita's question ( ... )
