Day 54: Recreational Field

And thus concluded a perfect start to a perfect day. Making him explode from every facial orifice was a totally justified response to Peter not doing anything at all.

The nurses' hearts had defrosted just enough to permit them a change of clothes and a desperately needed wipe down. Nurse Joyce - Rachel had been apologizing the whole way back to ( Read more... )

Just when he thought things couldn't get any worse. Byrne walked to his next shift with a scowl on his face, feeling utterly miserable from everything that had happened. First he wakes up in an asylum and is told he isn't who he knows he is, then he's told this place is an experimental facility and someone he recognizes was here at some point, and then there's a food fight that ends in everyone getting gassed whether they participated or not. He should've taken Renamon and fled when he had the chance, damnit. He even expected the soldiers weren't going to take anymore, he should've been smart enough to realize they'd use tear gas to neutralize the riot. The guilt was nagging him ever since he'd escaped from that cafeteria. He hoped Renamon was alright - he hadn't seen where she'd been taken to, he'd been so focused on his own suffering ( ... )

As if the food fight hadn't been bad enough by itself! One minute he'd been hiding under the table with Peter, good as gold. The next he was choking and his chest was tight and his eyes were streaming and he could barely even draw a breath without coughing like his lungs had suddenly been filled with water. Kibitoshin was just lucky that his nurse had found him relatively quickly and hauled him out of the room before he- before he died or something! Less lucky was the fact that he'd hit his head on the table at least three or four times before he successfully got to his feet ( ... )

As a highly trained Ninja, Sai had gone through many protective measures once he realized what was being released. Because of this, he came out better than most, but not unaffected altogether. His eyes watered something fierce. The nurse, pleased with how well he'd behaved in the previous shift, gave him plenty of time to clean himself up afterward, and he couldn't help but be grateful for that. If anything, it was clear that the nurses and the soldiers weren't working in complete unison ( ... )

"Oh, oh I see we're..." he sniffed loudly, managing little to help his absolutely soaked face, then continued, "... we're supposed to answer when they call out names then!"

Brook found himself understanding the roll call as the suited gentleman continued down the line of patients they'd created. As he waited for his turn, wondering if he would have to answer to 'Brook' or 'Florian', he fussed at his afro. The battle had been a fierce one, but except for an especially stubborn fork, he'd managed to keep his mess of hair absent of anything too terribly damaging. Although the fork was proving to be rather stubborn. Stubborn enough, in fact, that when the man came to him, he nearly did not hear the call of "Rousseau, Florian!"

"Eh? Ah, me, I mean! Or is it 'here' instead?" Brook tilted his head, continuing to pull at the fork, "Or perhaps I should say present! Yohohoho!"

"Get out of line!"

"Yes sir!" Brook, fork and afro all went scrambling away form the line and the now determined scary person in a uniform. He shuddered a little ( ... )

Sai stopped mid sit-up to regard the man approaching him. He remembered Brook. It was hard to forget someone that distinguishable, even after a single meeting. Not many were that tall, and those that were certainly didn't sport a mass of hair of that magnitude. ...A mass of hair that was currently sporting a fork. He had a fair idea of how that had happened, and he was surprised the man wasn't even more of a mess after how many things had gone flying in the cafeteria.

He didn't appear sedated at least. That was good. The ninja remained seated on the ground, meaning he had to peer up even further as the pirate came near. "Good morning, Brook-san. You seem to have gotten through breakfast without injury." And that was basically a compliment, for as much as his acquaintance would want to take it as one.

Brook had avoided sedation and most things thanks to a convenient, yet accidental trip to the floor of the cafeteria. From there to under a table had helped keep him from harm as well, though once the gas had been released even the cover of a table hadn't save either him or poor Minato. However the other boy had been in the roll call lineup and looked to be fine, so Brook was not that worried.

"Without injury perhaps, but not without some lingering difficulties!" Brook announced as he gave another tug on the item in his hair, "It's stuck good, though I suppose that's to be expected! Yohohoho! The nurses didn't even notice it during the cleaning up! Must have been hiding..." he wondered. The nurses had been in a bit of a fuss with everything going on though, missing a fork buried in his afro would not have been so surprising.

While Peter had read up on tear gas in the past, it was one thing to know what it did and another to actually experience his body going haywire in response to it. It was like he was suddenly Niagara Falls when it came to pretty much any fluid that could come out of his mouth, nose, and eyes -- well, at least he hadn't gushed blood or anything, but the stuff was only supposed to incapacitate, not kill.

So while it had sort of felt like he was going to die just because his eyes and his chest were burning and he could barely breathe, everything had cleared up in the end. How it happened was definitely a blur. He remembered a nurse grabbing him and even remembered getting stripped and hosed down, but he was only really aware of what was going on again when he was heading down the hall... toward somewhere ( ... )

Badd had been concerned that Gumshoe wouldn't be able to handle himself in the riot--he should have been worried about himself. The former detective wound up hunched against the wall with his head right next to a vent, and in the din of the locked cafeteria he could just barely hear the hiss of escaping gas ( ... )
