Day 53: Lunch

Nov 30, 2010 15:05

There was little to be said of the daily business that went on. He allowed himself to be shuffled, mind embedded too deeply in things he shouldn't be dwelling on. The night was over, the shadows had vanished, and there was little more than bad memories to be left in their stead. This was logic, pure and simple, and should have been reassuring but ( Read more... )

Scott felt marginally better following his little wangstfests/reconnecting sessions with Indy and Peter (and also Peter's friend Brainiac 5, whose parents were cruel, hateful people when it came to names, apparently). So maybe he couldn't do anything about the fact that to some people, he was little more than lines on a page; maybe Porky was dead and he wasn't sure why he wasn't overjoyed by that fact; maybe he could be a total dickhole to people sometimes despite his best efforts. But he was still breathing, wasn't he? He was still pretty healthy, and that was after being shot at and battered in a few different ways. And despite his occasional dickhole-ish behaviour, he still had friends and allies around, even in this place where only one person (17 years old) really knew him. As a wise sage had once said: everything did not suck ( ... )

"Pizza." Lightning was far from impressed as she walked to a table, studying the... thing on the plate in front of her. It didn't matter if it came in slices or not- apples and tomatoes were often sliced and they were good for you. This was also true of many other sliced foods. However, this slab of bread and cheese(?) just looked weird and greasy. She was certain she didn't want anything to do with it.

Problem was, that pettiness over the menu was now an issue far larger than Lightning really wished it was- she'd spent more energy than she could spare fighting off those weird monsters last night, and what tiny bit she'd already eaten that day during breakfast had served to kick-start her metabolism. Now, her body was annoyingly insistent on eating something with a nasty vengeance... she was starving, and not in the cute "it's been three whole hours" way children often indulged in. This was far more literal.

Fortunately, there was also another dish - something that at least resembled a simple salad. Lightning tried to keep her eyes ( ... )

"... What?"

Naturally, Lightning froze at the man's sudden, strikingly relevant commentary, looking up and over at him with eyes wide and grip instinctively tightening on the fork in her hand. For a wild moment her immediate thoughts took over- who would want any more of Snow if they could help it?, directly followed by the question of who this man was, how he knew Snow, and how he'd managed to miss that the rather tall, conspicuously loud-voiced blonde was already here ( ... )

Scott had thought he had been pretty clear. Had he not been clear? He had been pretty clear, as far as he was concerned (which, unbeknownst to him, wasn't far enough). Did this girl even know what snow was? With all the worlds and stuff, it was possible.

"What, do you not know snow or something?" he asked, blinking.

The guy's question didn't help Lightning at all. She glared at him from under the layered fringe of her hair, eyes narrowed, leaning forward until her elbows contacted the table. If you expected an answer, you didn't ask questions that were entirely vague. What was he even thinking?

"I know Snow Villiers," she said, her voice low, "but I take it that's not who you're talking about." A moment later though, she finally recalled past her irritation that there was something Snow was apparently named for- a phenomenon like normal rain, only frozen into tiny pieces instead of a liquid. However, obviously she'd never seen any... at least not in person. The only places on Cocoon that ever had the weather turned cool enough to get it were touristy areas she'd never had reason to visit.

"You mean the weather...thing?" she asked, but then pressed her lips together briefly, annoyed at presenting such a strange-sounding question herself.

Sorry again for the wait! Should be good for keeping on top of backthreads again now. vsyourface December 10 2010, 00:14:54 UTC
"Yes. The weather thing." Scott blinked, honestly confused. What other kind of snow was there? She had mentioned a "who" and some other weirdly pronounced word. Did she think snow was a person? Was there seriously someone somewhere in the universe named Snow?

Man, and he had thought Cloud had it bad with the weird hippie name thing.

Scott shook his head. "I feel bad for you if you're from somewhere that doesn't get snow, dude. Ladydude. It's cold and wet and makes it hard to get places, but other than that, it's seriously the best thing ever."

"Okay." Lightning internally rolled her eyes, making a show out of angling her body away and then focusing back on the food she'd been given. She really wasn't interested in what some random prisoner thought about frozen weather. Why would anyone even want that if it was 'cold and wet and made it hard to get places' like he said? She got the impression that the strictly pretty stuff she was thinking of wasn't quite the same as what he had in mind.

He also didn't seem the type to get a lot out of breathtaking wonders and all that- she'd seen plenty of those of both genders oohing and aahing over Bodhum's sunset and fireworks, so she thought she could probably recognize it by now. Who knew what he meant, then.

In any case, her stomach wasn't going to allow much more dawdling anyway. Working a fork for her salad was, embarrassingly, a little more awkward than it should have been at the moment, but she was nothing if not determined and willing to make do. Hopefully Mr Know-What-This-Place-Needs would get the hint.
