Was talking to Doom, and an odd idea struck.
What would a group of geeks come up with on a story written by commitee?

So let's do a sci fi. The idea is to build a plot by everyone adding a plot point.
Start with simple, on line ideas tossed in. Start with something common but fun, and see where we end up.

A salvage operation at the fringes of

They are mostly human, but have one alien of a species that does not normally interact with humans.

Recently, various systems around the operation have turned up obviously sabotaged.

the 'derelict' is perfectly functional. No reason for it's abdonment can be found.

A distress signal is received from a seemingly empty section of space.

One of the crew gets caught red handed in the middle of another act of sabotage, but kills themselves before motive can be determined.

They planted a virus designed to damage the ships AI, but either they were caught in time, or it's affects aren't readily apparent.

However, a side effect seems to have been a change in the ships voice from a soothing, calm, HAL 9000-ish voice...

to Gilbert Gottfried.

Of course, that could be the intended result. To drive the crew to suicide.
