I hate to watch movies in the theater

mainly because I prefer to watch movies in the comfort of my own home,on my schedule, drinking a beer, wearing dirty sweatpants;no one yakking with their friend right behind me.

I'll occaisionally make an exception for movies with effects that would be lost on a small screen: I saw 300 and the Star Wars prequels on a big screen, for example. But the ( Read more... )

*nods to everything you said*

It's why I don't buy diamonds or have any desire to own them.

I agree that the whole diamond thing is BS, no matter where they come from, but De Beers and Africa are starting to lose their stranglehold on the diamond market: about a third of them now come from Australia. I don't know if that's had any effect on diamond prices; if it pushed diamond prices down, there'd hopefully be less incentive for "blood diamonds" to be generated.

In checking some figures on this, I read at Wikipedia that diamond engagement rings didn't really become popular until the 40s, when De Beers started pushing it. It's always seemed like some sort of bizarre dowry to me, but one going in the opposite direction from a traditional dowry.

I also hate those fucking diamond ring commercials De Beers funds -- pure fucking drama playing on people's fears of abandonment, IMO. But if I ever get married I'll probably have to buy the woman a diamond anyway.

I agree, they are offensive as hell...implying that you can be a turd/absent as long as you cough up a rock and that is all that women really want.

*shrugs*
Not necessarily:my husband never got me one...but this is making me reconsider what I might request/hint for future anniversary presents.
I got one from my first marriage, embarrassingly enough. But,it was given to me LONG before I knew about any of this crap.

All of that "I am Woman, hear me squee, 'Ooh, sparkly!!'" advertising shite annoys me to no end. Unfortunately, stereotypical ads are profitable because most people do think in stereotypes, or rather use them as an excuse not to think.

Or to quote the lovely and talented Ron White on their real purpose:" Diamonds ,that'll shut 'er up."

The Kimberly Process is akin leaving environmental regulation to industry.

"No, we're not pumping mercury into the watershed. Trust us."

Thought about your post this morning when I saw today's Achewood: the character named Roast Beef is considering buying a diamond and getting engaged.
