This section's rather long, so I'm cutting it to spare f-lists; much text natter, and some RenFaire pics -- here's a teaser, showing a member of the Seattle Knights in fine form:
Thanks! RE: the weather, the Tri-Cities area (of which Richland is part) is semi-desert -- pure rocks and sagebrush outside of town. The day these pics were taken it was about 85F there. Given that some years it's been as much as 100-105F for YMG, it was really quite temperate . . .
My sword in that photo is this model -- not top-of-the-line, but OK for the money (CAS Iberia tends to provide good value that way). Nice balance, nice weight (about 1.5 kilos), very usable. Only for show and katas, since it's sharp, though. No sparring with that one!
I'd love to see a pic of your claymore someday (the version of Jack Harkness who lives in my head is laughing right now, but there's no other way to phrase that, really . . .). Some of the historical ones were pretty darn heavy, but IIRC those tended to be more ceremonial than something you'd actually take out and use. Can't cite a scholarly reference for that at the moment, though Google did turn up this entertaining forum discussion. :D
Good to have you back online! I'd been hoping nothing was amiss.
Meanwhile over here, the Maryland Renaissance Festival joust team is rehearsing for opening day the last weekend of August. They are not choreographed; the combats are real, but they train intensively.
MDRF has the largest "permanent" campus of any US renfaire. I say "permanent" because their 20 year lease on the site is finally up, so there is considerable question whether they will be at the same location next year (in -- I kid you not -- Crownsville, MD). The rotten economy may actually work in their favor there; the lease grantor died a few years ago & his heirs were chomping at the bit to turn the site into condos. Now... not so much.
