Questions of Deep and Serious Import* (*not)

Watching the new Twilight trailer, I have two questions and one observation.

1. Why do chicks always pick the vampire?

2. I'm genuinely not trying to be snarky here . . . but why does this trailer feel so much like a parody? Because it totally does, at least to me. I cannot pin down why that's the case, though ( Read more... )

I didn't make it through the whole trailer. My cat Lucy, sitting next to me and watching the screen move, loosed a rather vocal and emphatic yawn. I have to agree with her.

Interestingly, countessaleska watched it with me, and she actually said, "This looks like a parody," which was exactly what I was *thinking,* so it may not be me . . .

You should really watch to the end. The feline-modeled CGI wolf is a real eyebrow-raiser. I'll never understand why animators (and this is a general SFX observation) never pick the right animal to work from. It doesn't look "cool," it's just really distracting. At least for a critter geek like me.

I hang out with artists, two of whom want to pursue careers in costume design for sci-fi and fantasy movies. So I do understand, I hear about it all the time.

I'll watch it... someday. The whole movie. After my period of voluntary abstinence from alcohol is over.

I honestly can't answer that first question except to say that it just happens. If there is a vampire I will fall for him. I blame my early fangirl experiences with Buffy. I went to see Twilight coz I was really really bored. I was expecting it to be dire (I wasn't disappointed) but I still came out of the cinema totally and irrevocably in love with Edward Cullen. And the next day I bought all the books and read them inside a week. My sister read the books at my urging and she too fell for him to the extent that she told her fiance that she probably loved Edward a little bit more than him!! There should be a proper scientific study conducted coz while I can't explain it I'm certainly a victim!!

... oooh, new thought upon seeing that icon. May be the vampire thing will carry over to Eleven!!

Heh -- I'm pretty sure Eleven's vampishness is due to a lousy Photoshop job when inserting him into a promo pic of the TARDIS (they went way overboard when adjusting the color filters). But the pose and expression don't help . . .

RE: vampires, I can sorta see the appeal (though, being much older than yourself, I was a Lestat girl back when he was cool), but I still get more of a "zing!" out of shapeshifters. Different wiring, I guess . . . ;)

I don't know, the way his eyes disapear into shadows all he time is somewhat suspcious to me. Heh!!

Ah Lestat, I refuse to believe he's ever not cool!!!

Lestat will always be cool -- some of the later books he stars in, though . . . D:

Heh -- yeah, MS does have pretty impressive brow ridges. Adds to his unusual/unique look, though, which seems right for the Doc. :D

I fall for real vampires. Not nancy emo boys, that 'sparkle'...Sorry, these Twilight beings can be some sort of mythical creatures, but they aren't vampires. The Lost Boys would kick their collective asses.

And yeah, I think they are going for an emo 'sparkle' Eleven. ::sigh::

I dunno, I've always been fond of the shapeshifters myself. Poor woobies, they need moar luv, too. :( ;)

Actually, much as I like to make fun of "emo vampire Eleven," I'm not to worried about that being their real direction with the character. I think the vamp-iness of the one publicity photo was a mix of poor color correction when photoshopping MS into the image (and trying to get him to match the background) combined with the fact that he's dressed in a way which looks like the "Twilight" kids . . . who, in turn, really look a lot like regular kids (i.e., he's really not dressed too oddly for a youngster today; ditto his hairstyle).

At least, I keep telling myself that . . .

Why do chicks always pick the vampire?

I think it's the appeal of the bad boy.

And the lipstick is a very unfortunate color.

Well, yeah, but werewolves can be bad boys, too -- and it seems like a shapeshifter is always the other point of the Urban Dark Fantasy Romance triangle . . .
