notice the distinction between okay and not-okay deviance. anorexia... almost okay. autism... okay.
the professionals make distinction between "mental illness" and "character disorders" and neurological disorders. I read this story yesterday.
notice the change of attitude at discovering that the man has a okay reason for odd behavior, versus a not-okay reason.
twenty years locked up will do people with certain diagnoses a world of good. just not people with particular diagnoses. he tried to kill himself, he assaulted people. had a lot to do with the abuse to him condoned by the authorities.

I actually had a shrink once who was convinced that *I* had Asperger's Syndrome. That was his explanation for all of the unexplainable "problems." My mom, being the question-authority-type that she is, read up on Asperger's and went back and told him that that was absolutely not my problem. He argued, but she was able to make him drop it. If only she'd disagreed with some of the other diagnoses I was given...
