i was o get a rootcanal & crown when my dentist told me of a then-new procedure: pulp capping: http://www.mgoldmandds.com/pulp%20cap.htm

i got it about 5 years ago and have never had a problem. it did not hurt and i think it cost $800-900. no recovery period at all. maybe you would be a candidate- i am very pleased i was able to avoid the root canal.

I had a triple root canal in October, which cost $1700 (I have no health or dental insurance). They tried to talk me into getting a crown for another $1200-1500, I said "no" because I couldn't afford it, choosing instead to not chew on that side. Interesting adjustment, but saving me a mortgage payment's worth of $$$$. I guess bottom line is, you can actually get away without having the crown.
