So yesterday I was out in my car, taking it to get its rego check done.  It was out of rego because I had it in getting work done on it that took longer than expected. That's fine. I had it booked in for the rego check yesterday morning ( Read more... )

I'm definitely with you on the drunk driving case but not on your own incident: I think it would be different if you hadn't actually had a verifiable (had the cop chosen to do so) appointment to get the rego updated for that day - this wasn't a case where he just let you go with a sob story that oh, you'd been meaning to get to it but hadn't had time due to small children or something.

Another nice little piece where history repeats itself. What is the tally now? Politicians and or their staff getting off with a slap on the wrist and a red face. It's ridiculous. We like to think that Australia is this great big awesome democratic nation, pfft. Think again, people.

Sometimes I wonder why I studied law at all.

You would not believe what percentage of my job consists of writing a response to the same letter:

'I was speeding. I always speed. So in fact I was breaking the law. But then I got fined. Fined! Lost demerit points! Just because I was breaking the law! Why should I be punished because I habitually break a law intended to protect the public?'

I cannot believe how many people write in to complain that they are being punished *for breaking the law*.

Of course, even worse is the vision of the well connected not being punished at all.
