Sean was no one’s fool.
On paper this was always going to be a big match. Although he wasn’t that bothered, Sean had bet on the Netherlands to lose, only a little flutter, a pony, nothing major. If he won he’d take Orlando to Sheekey’s for dinner. Orlando liked Sheekey’s. And Sean liked nothing better than seeing Orlando happy.
Russia took the lead in normal time when Roman Pavlyuchenko volleyed home, only for Ruud van Nistelrooy to head in an 86th-minute leveller for the Dutch.
In truth it felt like the Netherlands had peaked too early, they lacked the hunger of the other team but it was with sadness that Sean and Orlando watched the Orange go down to the White Russians after extra time.
“At least it didn’t go to penalties,” Sean sighed as he turned off the TV. “And at least I won some money, I’ll take you out for dinner,” he held his hand out to Orlando who dropped into his lap. “Before I head up north for Crusoe…”
“I think I’ll come with you,” Orlando sighed into Sean’s broad chest, long fingers gently stroking his lover’s face. “Let’s go to bed and watch some porn.”
“Best idea you’ve had all day.” Sean switched the lights off as they made their way upstairs.
