"It's better as a duet," she told him in response to his compliment, with a faraway look. She missed Glinda more than she would usually admit, but since even returning home wouldn't allow her to see the other woman, it was just as well the witch was stuck here in Manhattan where there were people willing to accept her. "It was my best friend's farewell to me, so it's the best I had to give another friend, whether or not he deserved it in the end."
The witch introduced herself. "I'm Elphaba." Noting his attire as well as the almost reverent tone of understatement when the topic of her song arose, she asked, "You're not another friend of Spin's, by any chance? I had noticed a pattern in the clothing." And the love of music.

He couldn't understand why the woman seemed familiar until she introduced herself. Elphaba? From the network? The pieces fell into place. It was bound to happen if she was flying around on a broomstick, and he kept visiting the rooftop. Though, that wasn't exactly what had happened.
So at her question, Derek showed no surprise. If there was one thing Daniel had taught him, it was that the EBA knowing each other was obvious. Denying or avoiding it only made things worse and confusing. Suits (which he wore on a whim today) and shades (which he always wore outside his room) did stand out. And... maybe a few other things. J did have that crazy pompadour. "Small world. I'm Derek, and I am. Newer arrival."
