The Captain's tone was not unwelcoming in the least. While he had entertained the idea that the Captain would refuse to converse with him after the altercation of the day before, it appeared that his assumption was incorrect.
"I would like to request an audience with you," Spock started to respond, his tone of voice deliberately neutral. "Preferably face to face. I have reached a personal decision that I believe I must share with you."
Spock would not mention that the personal decision had required a full night's meditation to reach, Kirk's words unbalancing him more than he had initially thought.

Spock found that it was unnecessary to address Kirk's solicitation that he break with regulation- unnecessary because he would not, except in the case of a dire emergency, breach it. The Captain would just have to contend with his etiquette.
The joke did indeed go right over Spock's head. His face tightened imperceptibly in bemusement. "I was not aware of any properties a coat hanger may possess that would allow it to repel visitors. Is this a new model I have yet to encounter?"

"If you consider the fact that your father was an accomplished man, it is not so surprising to have his former colleagues assess you in the same manner. It is possible that they are only curious as to what your full potential is. While such expectations can be unsettling, it could also be considered a compliment," Spock observed, providing his own brand of logic.
"However," Spock added, his softer than it was a moment ago, "I can assure you that you do not have to "take it" from me."

It all seemed so unnecessary. Disorderedly complicated at the very least.
Spock angled his head in bemusement at the pause, uncertain as to why Kirk was intensely scrutinizing him. Kirk appeared to do so frequently, more so when he offered his opinion on personal conduct.
"It is of no concern. Of course, it is my expectation that you emulate your father in matters of regulation and conduct." If Kirk believed that being friends with Spock allowed him to escape Spock's insistence that he follow regulations, he was mistaken.
