Shikamaru was one of the calmest heads in Konoha, it took a great deal to phase him. However nothing he had run into during his time as a ninja prepared him for this. Not this. This was... it would make Orochimaru reel. Such a tactic, such a disgusting manner of capture and reuse ( ... )

She didn't hear his footsteps over her ragged breathing. Even if she had, she wouldn't have looked up. She would have been to afraid it was Kuwabara. He didn't need to see her like this.

But when his arm wrapped around her, she dared to look up. Her eyes were turning red and puffy from the tears that still flowed down her cheeks.

"S-Shikamaru." Her voice was barely above a whisper. He was someone else she didn't want to see her cry, yet she couldn't stop. So, she just leaned against his side.

Shikamaru just held her, held her close. A part of his mind attempted to point out how silly it was for a ninja to console the Grim Reaper. However that part was quickly silenced. Someone he cared about was hurting, that's all that mattered.

"Just..." he started, but again his words failed him. He had several thousand ways to kill, a few of them involved words to keep the enemy off their guard. However the shock of the situation still left him with no idea what would be comforting. Especially for someone who was in the business of death. These monsters, these people were suffering a fate he wouldn't even wish on certain members of Akatsuki. Let alone on civilians.

Shikamaru moved his hand to stroke Botan's hair. It seemed natural, right, "Just... let it out, it's the best way." He really hoped that was the right thing to ay.

Botan gulped.

"It's not right," she managed. "They were people with family and friends who loved them!." She shook, another salty tear leaving a trail. "And their souls...they have to be scared and all alone."

She hadn't felt this horrible since Toguro murdered the team's dear friend and mentor, Genkai. Everything that happened afterward came to a head with this.

It was all she could do to reach up and touch Shikamaru's hand.
