It hadn't occurred to Penny that this was a date. Sure, she knew it was Valentine's Day, but Billy hadn't made any indication that it was supposed to be a date, so she'd treated it as such. Just two laundry buddies spending a day together.

So when she showed up at the park she wasn't dressed any fancier than usual, jeans and a warm jacket to fend off the chilly weather, standard fare for her, really. She was pretty much always cold in this place, even on the warmer days. The plague of having grown up in California, and also being incredibly skinny with poor circulation.

When she spotted Billy as she reached the park she couldn't help but smile a little wider, raising a hand in greeting.

"Billy! Over here!" she called, making her way towards him.

The park was unusually silent. No cars whizzing by, no people talking, no birds. The lack of noise was something Billy had never really paid attention to, but sitting in the park with nothing but his own mounting anxiety to keep him company made him all to aware of it.

So when Penny's cheerful voice cut through the quiet of the park, you really couldn't blame him for jumping a little.

His thoughts immediately hit overdrive. Calm down. Breathe. You can do this. Just relax. It's not like you're going to screw up and embarrass yourself in front of her or accidentally let something slip and somehow reveal your huge crush on her, right? This couldn't possibly go wrong!

Okay, so maybe it was time to terminate that particular line of thinking.

Shoving those thoughts down, he turned towards Penny and smiled. "Hey!" he called back, taking a hand out of his hoodie pockets and waving. He had no idea how in the world he managed to keep the sudden quake of nervousness out of his voice, but he hoped he could keep it up. "Long time no see, huh

"Yeah," Penny grinned, stopping a couple feet short of him and shrugging her shoulders, tilting her head slightly. "No laundromat's here so we're not so much laundry buddies anymore." Her eyes shifted off to the side a little, feeling slightly awkward for a moment. When she looked back at Billy again her smile was back, in full force.

"So what have you been up to?" She'd been busy enough with all the things she was getting to do around the city. Not so much the fighting or general rescuing thing, but there was the whole, feeding people who needed feeding, and helping out wherever she WAS of use. That was important to her, being useful.

"I'm starting to think 'disaster buddies' sounds more appropriate," he said with a small laugh. Smooth, Billy. Smooth.

Her next question threw him off. "Just- you know... just surviving," he said, somewhat flustered but hoping against everything it wasn't too obvious. He didn't expect the question and so hadn't prepared a lie something else to tell her that wasn't "working on a wrist-mounted stun ray." In an attempt to distract her from inquiring further, he brought up the cooler and opened it, taking out two bowls, spoons, and the little container of yogurt he'd managed to find in the wilds of the city.
