Maya waited until long after the rumbling stopped to get out from under the desk. Mia and Mr. Armando had been huddled in there too, but Maya had closed her eyes and covered her ears to anything but Mia's calming voice when it started.

When it was over and the building had not fallen down, she felt much braver. Mia was in a daze, so she didn't mind if Maya wandered out in front of the hotel to look around.

There was dust in the air, just like the other time, and she could see places where buildings had fallen elsewhere. She hoped everyone was okay, prayed they would be safe, wondered if there was anything she could do-

And then she saw a cowboy.

"Did I hit my head in there?" she wondered out loud, staring with wide eyes at a real-life cowboy.

Brisco was starting to get creeped out by the silence that hung in the streets, hearing only the occasional breeze and the clink of his own spurs on the ground. It was weird. It was really weird, and he really didn't like it.

He stopped abruptly when he heard a voice. He turned and saw a strangely dressed girl standing in front of the hotel. She looked disoriented and confused, but unharmed. But, well, he was looking for people to help, so...

"Pardon me, miss," he said and approached, politely removing his hat in the presence of a lady. "Are you alright? Quite a... well... whatever that was, it was somethin' alright."

Maya blinked a few times and eyed the strange man. Hat. Spurs. Boots. Yep. Definitely a cowboy.

"Oh! Yes, sir, I'm okay," she assured him. "Well. If you're a cowboy, then I'm okay. If you're not a cowboy I think I might be having some post-traumatic stress hallucinations, so I really hope you're a cowboy."

Brisco laughed. The girl seemed to be a little strange, but at least she was friendly and unharmed. Besides, if past experience was any proof of anything, strange people were at the very least good company.

"Yeah, that's me," he said. "You're not hallucinating. Name's Brisco. Brisco County Jr."
