The dust that the building threw up was thicker than smoke, and there was a long moment in which -- while it cleared, and she picked herself up -- Blaze just expected Silver to land next to her; perhaps a little panicked, but otherwise unharmed. It wasn't the first time he'd had to use his powers to get them out of a scrape; she didn't think it would be the last, either.

But Silver didn't.

She waited a moment longer. Her stomach started to twist with nerves; they were good at finding the other -- had to be, when Iblis had been around (when Iblis had been free)--

"Silver--?" she called, taking a step forward, and then another, and then stopping, pulling at the debris one piece at a time; less a twist, and now more straight nausea. There was no way anybody could still be under there... but there was nowhere else for him to be. The tell-tale glow Silver gave off when he flew or floated was nowhere.

"--you idiot, will you answer me!"

He'd been awake for the entire thing. There was no merciful blackness, no fainting, no escape from the collapsing building or the damage it did.

He was awake when the chunk of cement fell on his back, breaking ribs and trapping him against the concrete of the already broken street. He was awake when the rebar was driven through his leg, and when the jagged glass slashed his face, the resulting cut flooding his eye with blood and leaving him all but sightless. He was awake to see the dust rise and to choke on it.

And he was awake to hear Blaze calling for him.

"B-" was all the further he got before the dust and the pain in his lungs and his leg and his side and his everywhere rose up and overwhelmed him, killing his words in his throat.

But he was still awake.

And Blaze was still looking, by now working on a strange sort of autopilot that sat on top of her rising panic like a heavy blanket, keeping it muted by purpose.

The way the building had piled on top of itself meant that there were small gaps in the debris here and there, too small for Blaze to wriggle through, but on the off-chance that there was one, she kept looking. On the off-chance that Silver was even still alive, she kept calling for him through the ones she found, but if Silver replied, then tumbling debris or the sounds of the creatures in the distance muted them out.

She was stuck. She couldn’t get through. She certainly couldn’t move a whole building. She couldn’t find Silver. On her hands and knees, she peered down the closest hole to the centre of the wreck.

"If you can hear me," and then she stopped. If he could hear her, what did that mean, if he wasn’t responding? “...if you’re still a-under there, then listen. I am going to find others. I will be back. Don’t sleep.” And then she took off running, back the way ( ... )

He could hear her. Silver had heard Blaze's voice coming closer, but every time he tried to respond, the pain in his body and the pressure on his back stopped him cold.

But he heard her words, and though his response was once again a painful failure, he knew what he needed to do. He braced himself against the pain as best he could and tried to stay awake, at least until Blaze returned. She'd come back, he knew. He believed her. She'd come back.
