LJ made a boo-boo today and for a while the balloons were free & everyone was sending them everywhere.
No, no, my mistake. LJ was allowing paid & permanent accounts to each send 5 free balloon v-gifts. It was probably mentioned in the news journal, but I unsubbed that a while back.
Ah. That explains why when I checked on the price of v-gifts they were offering a bunch of balloons for 99c and a bunch of balloons for free. I couldn't figure out why anyone would opt to pay if they were free!
Aww, I was going to send you one of my five free balloons!
Perhaps there should be an opt-out for the birthday notification thing. I think you don't have to give the month and day though; just the year so LJ knows you're an adult?
I was in the UK in 2004 and didn't want the people I was visiting to know about my birthday so I changed it for a few months.
[Edit] I think if you set your profile to not display your birthday, your friends don't get told when it is. I just noticed that a friend who hides hers doesn't show up my my friends' birthdays list. That might be a good way around it for you.
Yeah, that's why I thought it might be important to let people know before I used up all my friends' goodwill!
Thanks for the heads-up. It turns out there is now an option to opt out of showing it to people, but it wasn't there originally when I signed up. I just don't have the time or energy to keep checking all the changes to functionality lj keep making, so I didn't notice until after I realised people were trying to celebrate my not-a-birthday. *facepalm*
I get all the month's birthdays at one time so no biggie- one more won't matter :D - btw, there is somecway of not having a birthday listed on lj as several friends of mine don't have them up. Not sure how, though...
*is relieved* I figured most of my flist would be fine with the snafu, but you know how both fandom and the internets bring out the crazy...
It turns out that, yes, there is now an option for not showing people your birth date. There wasn't when I originally signed up but obviously they had so many requests they turned it into a function. I just don't have the time or energy to keep up with all the changes lj keep making so I didn't realise this was possible till after people started sending me lovely gifts.
And thank you for that btw. Was a lovely surprise. :-D
*holds huggles tight* Thank you. I figured most of my flist would be, but it's lj and fandom so... *shrugs* You know how they can be. (If anyone knows it's us Old School Whovians!) I just really didn't want to mislead/upset anyone.
Isn't it crazy the hoops we jump through to try and balance out our social networks with our need for privacy/security?

It actually seems oddly appropriate given that Alice In Wonderland is opening this week...
