Deception

I just got the Deceptively Delicious cookbook by Jessica Seinfeld. I've read a couple negative reviews of the book and its principle, which is basically about hiding vegetables and fruit in kid-friendly foods so they don't know they're eating them.

Personally, I can't wait to try out some recipes. )

Ok, I'll admit to not reading the whole post (yet) but I will say that I was at a playgroup/halloween party a few days ago and our host had cookies and brownies she'd made from that book. I was skeptical at the chocolate chip cookies with whole garbanzo beans in them, but they were *really good*. I didn't actually try the brownies, but Clara snarfed them down and begged for more, so they must be pretty good even if they do have spinach and carrots in them.

My thought on that book is, I don't hide veggies from my kids, but making their treats healthier I think is a great idea.

TOTALLY! I've always put veggies in my spaghetti sauce and my mom was forever making "jello" out of raspberry puree and agar agar. Just because it's desert doesn't mean it has to be one molecule away from a lump of sugar.

Oh, I so want a copy of that cookbook! We're selling tons of them at the bookstore right now. Obviously I don't have kids yet, but honestly, it's hard enough getting Marcus (or even me, for that matter) enough vegetables throughout the day. I think it looks awesome.

Yeah, I'm totally geeked about using it on myself, too. I'm the only one in the family who eat mac n cheese, and if it had veggies in it I'd feel a lot better about my 10 pm snack. Heh!

daisan, you are so right -- there's no person as annoyingly self-righteous as a parent whose children are really, really well-behaved because of their mild personalities. Such persons' smug attitudes about their so-called parenting skills make me itch all over.

I like to ask exactly what their method is and then say, "Yeah, we tried that. My son's too smart to fall for it." :)

Wow. The Doob is pretty strong willed child if he willingly chooses to go to bed hungry rather than eating food he does not like.

Ugh, don't even get me started. I think today he ate a PB&J for breakfast, a donut at Sunday School and a strawberry smoothie. He wouldn't touch the penne with portobello mushroom and tomato sauce I made for dinner. I don't know how he can sleep when he's so hungry.
