That not only the victims but also the perpetrators desperately need God's love is an important moral insight that one of the speakers at a recent discussion organized at my church on the topic of human trafficking brought to our attention. It is true that these "buyers" in many cases are acting out of malice, a deliberate evil habit they have allowed to enter their self-identifications, their self-concept. But that doesn't mean they are beyond reach, and in some cases it is not so much a demonic malice but a despairing emptiness that drives them to do what they do. They are "seeking love in all the wrong places," as the hackneyed truism goes. We must pray for them with the intensity wherewith Jesus Christ prayed for those who nailed him to the cross.
Yes, that is so true. Modern slavery can't be ended by passing laws like the slavery of hundreds ago was. No president or parliament can stop it. The only thing that can release those who are currently bound is the witness and realisation of God's love. This alone can change people.
