I think often the writers would get a revelation of brilliance about Sheppard, but - not really knowing who Sheppard was to begin with - could never sustain it. Or maybe they did that on purpose, to make him seem more of an enigma. Whatever their intentions, I believe is speaks so well of Joe's acting that the audience/fans knew so much more about John Sheppard than the writers. Sometimes, it's depressing to think about how good Atlantis could have been.
I'm not normally a "whumper," but I thought Joe's portrayal was superb. He brought out all the things we love about Sheppard. And... Kolya is such a great villain... even dead.
Aw, such a woobie! And they did really badly in how they handled what they came up with about Sheppard's psyche in this. I know it's weekly tv yadda, yadda, but even so!
And I had to skip quickly past the hand thing. That's a personal nightmare of mine. :shudders:
To be your lead character, Sheppard always seemed to be batted around between the writers like no one was ever really sure of who he was. And I totally understand about the hand thing.
#5 is especially fascinating to me. He knows what Kolya is going to do, yet John will be damned if he'll show the bastard any fear, not realizing that (as with other things) it shows in his eyes. That's just a brilliant performance, and the beauty of screencaps and GIFs... an entire scene or character distilled down into seconds or one frozen moment.

The worst part of that episode was that there was zero closure at the end. He went through all that and it wasn't acknowledged at all.

So much has been said about the subtlety of his acting, and the last one should be Exhibit A in that discussion. Awesome.
But, as usual, I'm stuck at his luscious mouth in several of these, 'cause I'm shallow like that.
