OK, this story pinged on my science-geek radar, so I'm posting it for posterity.

Toxic Gases Caused World's Worst ExtinctionSo what does this mean to me? Honestly, it means that it seems to confirm for me that the Earth (as a whole) can survive and recover from any global warming humans may cause. I don't believe that humans could make the Earth ( Read more... )

But is it a question of the existence of life, or the quality of life? Concern with global warming and ecology is, I think, directed towards high long-term quality of life for humans. The term "sustainable" isn't used to indicate the only means of living, but a balanced way that interacts with the earth in a holistic manner, replenishing the ecosystems that are here. The earth itself might survive and life develop again after a toxic environment has been produced, but we will no longer be here to enjoy this existence. And we and our future generations will be here to experience the quality of life we are creating with our current behaviors.

At least, those are my concerns. I'm not trying to escape the inevitable--death--but rather make the inevitable--life--more holistic, for myself and for others.

I'm not preaching against any of the ecological efforts that are being made or being sought. I'm just arguing against the people who speak as if the damage we do is absolutely unrecoverable. That's a statement of arrogance and an exaggeration of man's importance and power that I just can't agree with.
