Check out the Hollywood Kickboxing Gym, on La Brea. (Despite the name, it's not that much about kickboxing.) I used to belong to them, and they were a great no-nonsense, not-that-expensive, all-yer-basics-right-here kinda gym. It's been a while and they might have changed in some way, but they're worth a look.
I've been hitting the gym for about seven months now -- 3 or 4 times each week, 45 minutes...and I thought that changes would occur within weeks -- but it took about three or four months to notice any significant difference...so my advice is to STAY WITH IT for at least three months -- don't give up too soon!
