Two Freedoms

Walking by the FDR memorial yesterday, I saw Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms" carved in stone.

Freedom of Speech
Freedom of Religion
Freedom from Fear
Freedom from Want

While I wholeheartedly endorse setting aside ideas that don't work even when they come from individuals who produce other ideas that do work, I find it a helpful exercise to set aside my own brilliance for a moment first to see if the person with the idea I want to only partially accept might ultimately be wiser than I or be taking a different valid perspective than mine. Sometimes, even years later, I suddenly understand the C when I first thought only the A and B of that person's idea were worthwhile. I (currently) believe the greatest ill of our "snowflake" generation is a lack of humility.

I admit I haven't been lying awake worried sick about your ideological autonomy or lack thereof, but as a friend I'm glad to hear about your progress.

You may be interested to know that when I was at Wash U, I skimmed through a copy of Mises's "On Liberty" until I found the passage where he argues that selling children is logically consistent with libertarian principles. "Fuck logic," I said for the first time in my life, "that feels WRONG." I've been much less charmed by the principled nature of libertarian philosophy ever since.
