i saw the first one, it sorta put me off from watching the second one.
while, yes, the actors make it seem like they are not really 'acting'...ethan hawke was just so undescribably 'jerkish?'...i just could not see the fascination with which the lady decided to keep staying with him. i did not see much patterns of interest for one another, but more for patterns of interests for their selves...but i do commend it for its awkwardness..which is really what put it on the map for me...i mean, how awkward is it to see someone in a public setting that you dont know, find them attractive, and find the courage to even make eye contact with them?
now i need to see the second to find out the real conclusion, eh?

I think what it was is that Jesse (Hawke) was very much trying to impress Celine (Delpy), having an air of bravado still and never making himself vulnerable. He felt he always needed to be "on" and propellant in an effort to make sure there was never a dull moment. A lot of that character is also probably derived from the youth of the characters, still seeking a place in the world, full of defiant energy. What I believe kept them interested in each other is that they were able to play off of each other's topic of conversation; there was never any confused, blank looks followed by dull silence ( ... )
