Lyra made sure the bed was made and that her desk was tidy. She brought out the plate of cookies she'd handwavily bought at All and Sundries, and set them, and a couple bottles of water, on the edge of the desk. She opened the door and waited for Dawn to show up, taking notes for Philosophy of Values until then.

Dawn made her way to the fifth floor, figuring that as long as she was up here, she might as well drop off the books she'd promised Dean. Maybe Lyra knew what room he was in. "Five oh nine, five ten..." She poked her head in and smiled. "Hi!"

"Hey!" Lyra looked up from her notes and blinked at all the books in Dawn's arms. "Come on in."

"Do you know where Dean Forrester's room is?" Dawn asked, a little short of breath from the stairs and the books. "I told him I'd loan him some stuff to help him catch up in Hunting, but then like an idiot I forgot to get his room number."

Lyra laughed. "Dean's my roommate. You can just put them on his bed, I'm sure he'll see them."

She gestured to her desk. "I have water, if you like. And cookies."

"I followed my father into the other world, which was called Cittagazze," she pronounced it chit-ah-GAT-zeh. "That's where I met Will. He'd found a window from this world to Cittagazze. I needed to find out more about Dust, so I went to his world looking for a scholar, uh, I mean, a physicist." She smiled at the memory of Dr Malone.

"Did you find him?" Dawn was always happy to hear about other peoples' lives. They were so different from hers.

"Her. Dr Mary Malone. I wonder if she's still working where she was..." Lyra shook her head. "Listen to me, doing all the talking. It's your turn. What's your life like that you need to decode prophecies?"

"My sister's a vampire slayer," Dawn said, figuring it was better just to get things out in the open, "and she and her ex-boyfriend have both shown up in prophecies. Plus, it's way easier to stop the apocalypses if you know they're coming."
