I think you might be interested in the linguaphiles community. There will be people there who will a) be able to discuss Chinese with you and b) possibly even have some answers.

That reminds me of the alternative handwritten characters I see in Japanese, wherever people dash off a quick note. Example character: 間

Fascinating, and reminds me of the Germans who assured me that I couldn't say 'you're welcome' because that's American - English people are supposed to say 'dont mention it'.

That's what I was taught as well. I can't even remember the last time someone said "don't mention it" around me in real life ...

This is why Korean's use the phrase "So-so". Who even says that any more?
So-so. Also "these days" and "at that time".
