What a beautiful story told equally as beautifully. It's a strange situation for anyone to find themselves in, least of all a young child, and the way that the fallout happens entirely "off-camera" is such a typical way of how things are seen by a child, who is deemed too young to understand what is really happening. How sad that Mrs. S continued to visit that tree, longing for her lover. How sad that Mr. S simply resigned himself to a life he probably didn't enjoy too much. How sad that the priest was the type of person to even engage in that in the first place.
But the way you told this story is so poetic and evocative, it turns it from something that could be just sad into something more bittersweet, and I love the way that feels.
Thank you so much <3 this means a lot! That experience has come up in my mind often and it is the first time I am actually telling it. The fruit of that forbidden tree has turned out a wonderful, strong woman though and that has always levelled out the disturbing memories!
