Think my Isshin's not up to expectations or maybe the direct opposite of what you'd thought he'd be like? Any questions and problems with my interpretation of how I play this lovable spazzy father, feel free to post here! I'm not that very well in playing him, so please do be gentle. |D
CHARACTER INFORMATION
Canon Character: Kurosaki Isshin [黒崎 一心]
Series: Bleach
In-Game Name: Kurosaki Isshin
Age: 49
Gender: Male
Ship: Serenity
Position: Chief Doctor
Appearance: Isshin stands taller than most men his age, at least about half a head and has a big physique. His skin is tanned and his hair is black and rather messed up, standing upwards and despite its look, is rather soft to the touch. His eyes are of an honest, down-to-earth sort of hazel brown and more often than not does Isshin dress rather colourfully, to put it mildly. He's been known to wear inappropriate attires in events and functions, such as a bright and loud Hawaiian shirt on the family's yearly visits to Masaki's grave or a completely informal attire in formal functions. Despite his age though he is very well built, with muscles and abs still well-defined from the workout he does quite often, not to mention the 'fights' that he get with his children. He's also notably hairy, and sometimes some might call him a gorilla, though he only laughs it off with his usual goofy smile.
Personality: To his children and many who know him, Isshin is... odd, to say the least. He's melodramatic, over-reactive for a man his age and more often than not grate heavily upon the nerves of other people from all his antics. Initially seen as nothing but a silly old man who loves to fight with his children and takes a perhaps too keen of an interest in what they do. He displays his affection for them either offensively or with an all-too-happy tone, which elicits comical reactions from his kids (usually in the form of a kick from Karin and Ichigo). Rather than getting mad at them though, Isshin only becomes more annoying and takes the attacks in stride, sometimes even countering them and continuing on his mission to be The Most Annoying Father Ever (TM). Back when the whole family was together, Isshin also seemed to enjoy making fun of Ichigo and has a tendency to talk to the large memorial poster of his late wife Masaki, which he has pinned up in their kitchen, whenever he feels particularly emotional... and that more or less comes with odd reactions as well.
However, under that cheery and crazy guise is a man with a sharp, analytical mind who can be grim and serious when he has to. He's an excellent fighter in combat with a reputation to boot (even if the years has made him less well known now) and usually knows more than what he lets on. Isshin isn't blind to the desires of his children and is aware of how they perceive him - in truth, in a way its how he brings them up, showing them how not to become the man who he is today. He's deeply rooted in his own (sometimes strange but still meaningful) philosophies from time to time, and more than anything else cares about his children a lot even though he may annoy them to no end. For his children, he would be willing to do anything to ensure their safety - for both him and Masaki. He's also a man of his word and treasures the relationships that he has formed with people over the years, and even though he may seem like an insensitive idiot Isshin actually is perhaps one of the most quick-witted people that most would have known, not to mention actually very forgiving and understanding - a big man with a big heart.
Abilities/Weapons: Due to close contact with a potent vein of mana crystals in his teenager years, dormant magical powers have awoken inside Isshin since that time and after much training, Isshin has managed to channel these powers in his zapakatou, a sword charged and powered with a small mana crystal. The Zanpaktou is named Tsukuyomi [lit. Moon Phase] and as with other zanpaktous, is activated with a special phrase - in Isshin's case, Tsukuyomi is activated with the line 'Scratch the sky, Tsukuyomi!' [Tsumeato sono ten, Tsukuyomi!].
Upon release, the blade transforms to resemble a scimitar, but has three spikes coming out from the inner edge. The blade is also jet-black with a white inner area on the two sides. The guard is that of a shuriken, black with white outlines, and the hilt (with a dark red inside) is wrapped with a black and a white bandage. [A rough picture can be seen
here.] With Tsukuyomi, Isshin is able to channel his magical powers through his sword as a means of attack, mostly through a wave of tangible magic power that can cause great damage upon direct hit. He doesn't use his powers a lot now though, and is not as adept as he was in his youth due to the long period that he hasn't used it. Without his sword though, Isshin can't do much with his magic, though he has on occasion used it to aid in his doctoring skills and healing, curing things that would have been hard or impossible otherwise through non-magical means.
Even without his magic though, Isshin has proven himself to be a capable fighter, if attacking his children as he always does shows anything. He's still amazingly fit and well despite his age, and can still hold his ground well enough against many of the younger fighters in this day an age. He fights mainly with his sword, a relatively simple style of swordplay focused on attack and easily twisted to defense. With or without his magic regardless, Isshin is still someone not to be taken lightly.
How well can your character hack?: Up to Easy - Isshin's not that all familiar with the journals, since he never really got one for himself. He'd be quick enough to learn the basics of how to use it, though it'll take some time for him to get things right. Until then, he's pretty much your Average Joe with the journals.
Weaknesses: Its pretty well-known that Isshin does indeed cares a lot about his three kids despite his actions suggesting otherwise, and would do anything to ensure their safety even though he isn't near them physically. This trait of his is all-too easily exploited and though his own fame as a bounty hunter/monster killer has died down quite a bit in the years he's been out of his line of work, those who do know of his exploits are usually those after him, since Isshin's made quite a couple of enemies back in the day. His silly antics also usually can get many easily all-too irritated and from there he receives loads of injuries from his actions, usually in the form of kicks or punches from his children namely Karin and Ichigo. He doesn't really give much respect to the government, being familiar with their corruption and that sometimes does get him into some trouble, though he always manages to get himself out of the frying pan... and maybe into the fire. Sometimes. Possibly due to the few impulsive moments that he has, though its rare.
History: A native of Ivona, Isshin was born in the mountainous town of Tulgim and in his childhood worked hard as a miner in the town. Due to the harsh work that every miner had to face there, Isshin was not a stranger to the many scars and injuries that he and many others would receive and it was already from his youth that he picked up medical skills - he had a good mind for it, somehow being able to perceive the injury and knowing how and what needed to be used to treat the aliment or injury. However, even his skills weren't enough to save his parents as they died in what could be said as a freak rock slide accident somewhere on the outskirts of the city. His parents were dead instantly, and now orphaned Isshin was taken in by a kind lady who was also a retired doctor. So as he was raised by the lady he was also taught on his medical skills and soon enough Isshin was well enough skilled to put some of the best to shame.
When he was around thirteen, his adoptive mother died of old age as well, and in wanting to put his skills to good use he followed a convoy to Shashta, where he made a good enough living there by helping to treat the wounds and illness for the then-small population there. However, things changed when he was about fifteen; wandering around the city, Isshin chanced upon a small vein of rather potent mana crystals. The power the crystals emanated somehow awoke dormant magical powers within him and Isshin found himself being able to do some sort of magic. At first frightened by these new powers, Isshin took the time to understand them and soon enough was able to control them well. It was also at this time when he began to see more - ghosts, spirits still bound to this world and unable to go to the next. While shocked at first, slowly and surely did Isshin get used to them, and ever started to regard them as more of human beings rather than ghosts, even if they were rather odd as humans.
Later on Isshin met up with one of the local blacksmiths in the town, and after much negotiation he managed to get a special kind of sword made - the sword that would be his zanpaktou. Using it, he learned how to hone his powers properly and after another year or two in mastering his zanpaktou, switched from making a living in doctoring to making a living in chasing after bounties and killing monsters, driven by his then youth adrenaline. Life was good and fine, with loads of cash to earn and time to simply enjoy life as it was - Isshin then shifted to live in the backwater, dangerous streets of Solare until one day, when he was about twenty, he was given a job to go to Colvus and aid in the forces battling against the latest monster invasion.
Isshin quickly headed there and managed to successfully help the forces, but not before receiving the displeasure of the person who he would devlop a most odd relationship with for the next few years: Ishida Ryuuken, a native of the city. Ryuuken was displeased at Isshin's arrival and more so at his help, and in partly to annoy him and also seeing that income would be fine here, Isshin decided to settle down in Colvus for the next few years and earn some good cash from killing the monsters here. The years passed and Isshin lived well, still annoying Ryuuken with his presence but otherwise would consider him a good friend, even if the other wouldn't admit it.
And then he met Masaki.
Masaki was a traveler from Ivona, who had come with her family for some business. It was love at first sight - and Isshin pulled all the stop and did all he could to court her once he saw her, and within a year of dating he proposed to Masaki, who agreed and after a happy marriage, bade his good friend Ryuuken farewell and headed back to Masaki's hometown in Meilor and settled down there. Soon after his kids were born - Ichigo, Karin and Yuzu. He put down his sword, never telling her about his abilities for fear of rejection and took up doctoring again, setting up a family clinic-cum-health shop in the town as a way of earning a loving. Though harder than his own life, it was fine and good - that was, until Masaki's death.
She was killed by a monster while on a walk with Ichigo, who was only nine then; his daughters were only around four or five. Life for them took a sudden turn - the life of their family was gone and the hollow was there could never be filled. Isshin blamed himself even until now for being unable to protect Masaki when he could, and always felt guilty in seeing how much his son blamed himself though he never dared to tell the kid the real reason why the monster was after him. Most likely because the monster could sense the dormant magical powers inside Ichigo and was after it.
After that, both Karin and Ichigo learned how to control their emotions, changing from who they once were while Yuzu took up the role of being the 'mother' of the family. Isshin acted like a crazy, insane father that both Karin and Ichigo always kicked; in his own way, showing them how not to be like, and not end up like how he was. When Ichigo was seventeen, he then left just like that one day, and Isshin despite his outside performance of melodrama knew that his son was going to be alright and never bothered to look for him. A few more years, and then his daughter Karin left as well, leaving him and Yuzu alone. It was then around this time where he heard tales of other people with abilities like him, and rumors on them upon the Silvana. Intrigued, he left Yuzu a note saying that he was off to a business trip and headed down to Abantire, where he consulted the captain and after some discussion, joined the Silvana as part of their crew in hopes of seeing these rumored people - and of course, to see how his two darling children were now out in the world.
Isshin spent a good while onboard the Silvana - a whole two years or so, being one of the cheerful people in that ship mainly full of linefaces and constantly serious bizness people. The man stayed wholly devoted to the ship, even as they went under many trials and tribulations like sudden terrorist attacks and the unwitting bombers in the Unification Day bombings. He was reacquainted with his old friend Ryuuken as well when he was on the ship and made a good number of new companions too. All in all, it was a good time - which was why everything was a bit of a shock even for Isshin himself when Alex was captured and even moreso as the Silvana broke down for good. With not much of a choice in the matter, Isshin wished the best for everyone and departed back for Melior, relieving his days back home for the next few months.
Still, the life in the skies was something quite wonderful, and Isshin did wish to experience it once more - which was why when Serenity was in town, the man took the chance to hope aboard in order to work on a ship once more. It really did matter what kind of things the ship was up to - after all, the people seemed to be good and fun (and could do with some cheer), and that was all that mattered.
