...Maybe you can save more by buying a 5-person tandem bike? I know a girl who bikes 15 miles a day and has her 3 kids pulled behind in a kiddie trailer.
She must have flippin' toned legs! (I'd say "huge" except people get the wrong idea.) Reminds me of Mrs. Anne Chaos, she walks all over town with the 2 kids everyday. She even takes Chaos with her on the weekends.
By the numbers, I could ride to work now that it is ~3 miles. However, the hills between are not something I relish tackling; typical W. PA steep up and down both ways.
Maybe I'll drop the whine someday and try hiking it (not having a bike kills the riding unless I already know I'll use it enough to pay!)
Quit yer whining - I used to have to walk out there every day (with my mom who *did* make the trip daily) when I was roughly Sarah's age :-P. Almost the same trip and nearly the exact same endpoint. A little difficult with the kids though.
Bicycle could work for parts of the trip, but walking the uphills is nearly mandatory (esp given the lack of sidewalk on Institute Hill and minimal ones on the South Side).
I will say from experience that if you were to be traveling around in town, it's rather effective (well, except that I think they now have an ordinance against things with wheels on sidewalks to include rollerblades and skateboards).

Congrats on the fuel btw!

Well, bicycles are supposed to be vehicles and therefore on the road, not the sidewalk anyway.
Funny thing is, skateboards and 'blades aren't allowed on the road either.
