Maybe Greg doesn't know many Spanish/Catalans. The ones I know are continually commenting ironically on one or other aspect of each other's behaviour/clothes/etc. Which I found quite refreshing when I first got here, being from a middle-class background where people pussyfoot around each other far too much.

The majority of his friends are Spanish/Catalan, and the conversation we were having about this was with a couple of Catalans. They just found our behaviour a bit odd, but then maybe most people would. The impression that I got was that they're much more complimentary and genuine in interacting with each other, less of the sarcasm, do you think I'm wrong?

Naah not really. They have an affectionate way of joshing each other which doesn't tread on any toes normally. Also in general there's a lot less aggression in the air than in the UK, so people are more chilled. Did you notice that or is it just me? Another thing they do is all speak at once, so if you're with a group of people there can be several conversations going on simultaneously, which can be hard to deal with if you're used to the English-style turn-taking.

Usually when I'm around then there are two simultaneous conversations going on, one in Spanish and one in English, with me the only one who can't participate in both.

Chilled out, most definately, so laid back their horizontal compared to the Brits. I'm still not sure if I could live with that all the time though.
