If I didn't know me, and I read my last few posts, I might think, "that guy has a problem with ethnic and religious groups." I know that's not true but I see things they way I do, for what they are. I think political correctness can go too far. But don't underestimate what a generalization can feel like to an individual of that particular ethnicity or religion. When someone says a generalization about hispanics, I feel like I've been singled out. I think most of the time I am an intelligent politically savvy woman. But when it comes to that, I get offended pretty easily I suppose. Ironically, it's not because my parents gave me some chip to carry around on my shoulder. It was the subject that we didn't talk about. I didn't know we were different until we moved into a white neighborhood. Then it was all too apparent. My dad refused to let us use it as an excuse. So if anything, he tried the assimilation argument with his family. My mom, as always, remained mum on the subject. I never got to know how it felt to be brown in a sea of white until I was the one ( ... )

There's no doubt stereotypes have been used against people whether there's truth to them, or exaggeration to cause pain. The trick is to tell the difference between malice and a harmless joke.......and that's not always easy.
