Execution in the name of God is heinous enough but there's an aspect of the burnings that makes it more disturbing, at least for me. This is a good one! I totally agree about the printing press being so important to the breakdown of the Vatican's power. It must have been incredible for the people at the time, being able to read the Bible on their own. Much of the clergy must have been horrified.

My printing press observation came when I was drafting a blog on the 'greatest invention of mankind' and realized it was very high on my list. I never finished that blog piece but as I started writing on religion I made the connection. I had to break my greatest invention thoughts into centuries because it's damn impossible to name only one innovation above all.

The printing press truly was the world wide web of the 15th century. The spread of ideas in the latter half of that century in comparison to the first half was an explosion of wisdom throughout the old world.

.... and yes, the clergy was horrified, as any dictator is to the threat of power in the minds of the people.
