Simple Words

They say humans are getting dumber, all this technology is actually reducing the amount of brain power we use. There is less critical thinking in daily life. By they, I mean behavioral scientists in a dull depressing office somewhere on a university. There are just as many others who claim we're only scratching the surface of our brain and the best ( Read more... )

Texting While Writing ogrevi November 17 2012, 06:30:46 UTC
For the most part, I hate what texting has done to people's ability to write. Part of why I like LJ better than YouTube is that people here seem to spend more time making sure they've made a reasonable and well-written response in their comments, and part of me does wonder whether people losing the ability to write coherently will eventually cause them to be unable to speak (and perhaps even someday to think) coherently. I do occasionally have these Newspeak panics, you know?
On the other hand, I have definitely gotten into the habit of actually saying, in conversation, "Aww, dubya-tee-eff?" in situations where I can't swear. So, maybe this is a case of "Them's speaking as shouldn't," as Gramma used to say.

I've heard tales of students handing in school assignments with texting shorthand, or textese, whatever it's called. Teachers are going crazy trying to make them write proper words but it's a losing cause.

I would never hire someone for a serious job who couldn't write reasonably well.

We’re like kids in a candy store. We haven’t yet figured out how to make the most of the exponentially exploding social technology boom. So we just kinda wallow in mindlessness, thinking it’s cool to declare ourselves rolling on the floor. What I do like about the limited space of FB/Twit/Comments is that it forces us to write succinctly, concentrating our words. However, most people - even if they had unlimited space and undivided attention -don’t have much meaningful to say.

I'm afraid my loquacious nature gets the best of me, even when I make a conscious effort to be brief. I'm capable of brevity when it's clearly in my best interest, but it's not a strong point. I have too much to say, meaningful or not. Twitter is not for me.

I don't text while driving. I do confess to use some of the text shorthand while texting.

Yes, FB has cut down on your blog posting. Life has cut down on mine, although I keep the genealogy blog current.

There are just some things that you need unlimited characters to express.
