Gorilla Monsoon

As I type we're getting hammered by our first monsoon of the season. The wind is rattling windows. I went outside for ten seconds and my eyes were filled with sand. Chairs are flying. It's futile to secure the yard. I just let it blow and pick up the mess afterwards.

The storms started this weekend but our corner of the valley was not hit until ( Read more... )

Is it always wind and rain, or sometimes just wind? Now I know what those are like from Burning Man, but they call them dust storms. It is wierd how you can see them coming. Do you carry goggles in your glove compartment? ;-)

You were commenting as I was editing. Tonight it appears to be only wind, and dust of course, but most storms have some component of rain. Sometimes it's just spitting intermittently, other nights pouring felines and canines.

Dust storms suck! The rain makes mud but helps keep the dust down. Either way, it's a messy result.

Those pictures are amazing, it's wild to see it coming dwarfing everything in its path. If you're just playing in the desert, it's much different, but when it hits our precarious infrastructure, what out. Nature is king. Does all the dust get in your car and the house, seeping through every crack?

The wind has stopped. I went out front. I can feel the sand under my bare feet. You can see the dust kicked up in car headlights as they drive past. Out back a couple of chairs knocked over and the pool is muddy on bottom with a film of debris floating on the surface. I know what I'll be doing after work tomorrow.

I looked at all 230 images in that link. Some are from snowy northern AZ early this year and there are fauna and flora photos. It's cool how they build on that weather slide show as the year goes on.

Check this YouTube video posted of tonights storm. There's calm before the wall strikes.

If you didn't know what it was, I could see where that would be scary. Definitely not something you'd want to get caught out in.
