April Fool? No, genuine update...

Wow, long time no... anything. It's been a hell of a year, is all I'm going to say. Nevertheless, movies and shows have still been watched, so I'll stick to those.

January

Downsizing - they had me at the trailer, with Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig deciding to solve all their financial woes by literally "downsizing" to six inches tall, where they ( Read more... )

Woot, a new post :D

Adding my .02 cents on the movies:

Downsizing: The world building was fantastic. So much attention to detail. I appreciated that the most. And I was also weirded out because my brother looks an awful lot like Matt Damon in this movie (not a compliment)

Jumanji: I just finished watching this a second time. So much fun! I like how it simplified gaming so that people who don't aren't completely lost.

I, Tonya: I love figure skating, but became interested in it a bit after these events had already happened. So I pretty much knew nothing. And I found the movie fascinating and I wish it would have won best picture. I recently rewatched it and was just as fascinated as I was on the second viewing.

Shape of Water: I was really excited to finally get to see this. And...I was left feeling a bit disappointed. I guess I just didn't buy into the romance aspect and everything felt a bit off.

Hee, I suppose it can't be all bad for your brother if he resembles Matt Damon ;). Yes, there was a lot more to Downsizing than I'd thought from the trailer.

Of the movies I'd seen that were nominated, I would also have been fine if I, Tonya had won. I didn't think it was as substantial story-wise as Three Billboards, but it was very interesting and had some unusual storytelling.

Yes, I wanted to love Shape of Water but just kind of... liked it. LOL.

Three Billboards kinda passed me by. Some of the early trailers were so vague, then it was only in my theater for like a week.

Caught a trailer for it that was on an old DVRd show and it looks awesome. So I plan to watch that one soon.

I also plan to watch Shape of Water again. I think I will enjoy it much more the second time since I know what to expect. It actually worked pretty well as horror (all I can think of is that finger!!!!) lol.

Still very much worth seeing, even if it wasn't as amazing as I'd hoped.

Interesting to hear a positive take on Three Billboards. I've been on the fence about seeing it since a lot of people seemed to hate it, so it's cool to see another point of view.

Total agreement about Jumanji. I enjoyed it a lot.

Not going to lie, the characters in Three Billboards were thoroughly unpleasant in their own ways. But... I kind of liked that about them as well? Without getting myself too deeply into hot water, there are certain kinds of people who can't accept anything that offends their sensibilities - I see it on social media all the time. Person X does this bad thing/expresses this unpalatable sentiment, and they're instantly evil for ever and ever, amen. Now this isn't an anti-social-justice rant, because I tend to be a bit of a liberal bleeding heart myself on social issues, but some people seem to be so very black and white about it ( ... )
