Merry... oh wait, not yet

Man, it's been a year. It started off pretty well (on a personal level - not even going to circle outwards) and went downhill from there. But still, I'm going to tidy up quickly with the stuff I've been seeing.

Blade Runner: 2049 - liked the original, although not with the same reverence as some. So I tended to watch this half as a stand-alone ( Read more... )

I loved The Disaster Artist! We laughed like hell through the whole thing. One of my favorite parts was the end, when they juxtaposed the movie with "the movie".

Unfortunately, I've been walking around saying, "Oh hi Carl" and then laughing like a loon, much to the discomfort of those around me.

Hee, yes, the ending was so cool and made me want to see the original also (although probably not enough to really go through with it). I couldn't help noticing that despite their best efforts, the "real" stars had a compelling quality to them, and even their "bad" acting had a lot of sparkle *g*. What a fascinating character, though.

If you want to see it without seeing it, watch the Honest Trailer for it on Youtube. The Screen Junkies make hilarious faux trailers which tend to be on the money.

Thanks, I did! How could I forget, "YOU'RE TEARING ME APART, LISA!". Truly the Stanley Kowalski/Marlon Brando of his time.

...it must have been a really strange shoot...

fwiw, I remember Muriel's Wedding being HUGE in the US back when it came out. I mean, probably not culture-defining the way it is there, but it was one of those little movies that really captured America's heart for a bit. so who knows, maybe the musical will play here.

I'd say, if you didn't love the trailer for CMBYN, don't expect to like the movie more. The trailer is a pretty straightforward and honest representation of the movie, imo.

Oh, interesting to know re Muriel's Wedding - I don't have much idea what the US does and doesn't get from Australia, whereas we have always been heavily influenced by cultural imports from the US.

LOL, I thought you hadn't seen the movie, so I checked back and saw you'd given in. I decided not to read more until I've seen it for myself. While it may be an accurate representation, there are always little moments that can make or break a movie for me, and I didn't get a strong 'feel' for either of the main characters just from the trailer, so they may be more appealing when developed. That said, it's also highly possible I won't like it any more, but I have to see it to know!

Oh, by all means, judge for yourself! Just don't let the hype beast raise your expectations too high.

Personally I *adored* it, but it's so much about my life that it didn't take much for me to connect to the characters... In a way, it feels like it was made for me. So I loved it but as it reaches ever larger audiences, I am mentally and emotionally preparing myself for a lot squee-harshing, lol. Which is legit -- people can make lists of all the reasons why it's bad or underwhelming or didn't work for them, and I can read them and nod along and see exactly what they mean... but it doesn't change the fact that it touched me deeply, and for that I will gladly forgive it all its flaws.

Hee, well, the good thing about the trailer not appealing to me that much is that I don't have high expectations. It's more like the hype has pushed me towards seeing it in the same way I would see the latest Star Wars or superheroes movie "just to see what all the fuss is about" and whether I might find something that happens to appeal to me too. Sometimes I do, and it's a nice surprise, and sometimes I don't, but at least I've given it a chance.

Beloved books and movies are highly personal, and it's always lovely to find something that is "just right". And of course I have my own set of things I adore and don't care a bit about any flaws that other people might notice. But as you know, it's never going to appeal to everyone in the same way.

Culture Club songs were part of the background noise of my childhood and I still enjoy them, but I've gathered for a while that Boy George isn't the pleasantest person, which is a shame. I'll stick to the records.

"Muriel's Wedding" made quite an impact in the UK, no doubt helped by the Abba connection. I haven't watched the film for ages but I remember enjoying it. :)

Yeah, I'd heard bits and pieces about Boy George, but I think hearing it up close (so to speak) did put me off more.

Love that you've seen it, and yes, the ABBA connection doesn't hurt. They actually became "characters" in the musical version who would talk to/advise Muriel, which was really fun *g*
